I will say this simply.... If you ride like this....Can I have your bike when you DIE!!!

Im not joking about this, that is overly dangerous for how short it is.

As per raceface,, the steerer must come at least 3mm above the hole in the back of the stem.....

Oh and another thing for those that are reccomending, or use a headlock of any kind................. NO offense, but all these contraptions do is give the ability to smash and index your headsets. They do absolutly nothing for keeping everything together. In fact I would say that if used in a situation such as this, all it would accomplish is to give the rider a false sense of security which will be leading into a very dangerous situation "WHEN" the stem/steerer connection fails....

What frame is that? Maybe a new frame with a shorter headtube would be the cheapest option. :?:

 That quick-release is what's making me keep coming back for more.

All the manf's press and retain the steerers a bit diffferently.... I almost always suggest going to the original manf's..... Def talk to Drake though... Not sure what his capabilities for this are.

Give Drake Thomas a call. I think I read somewhere that he can press in new steer tubes.

Might as well close this thread. The obvious has been stated ad nauseam.

If he doesn't get it by now, he never will.

    Update Pics

A little update on how this went down:

I know, there are some out there that expected "different " update pics but this is what I came up with. It was a pain in the ass, even with proper equipment for the task. I took a solid piece of steel and milled it into an insert to extend the steer tube. So that it fits with spacers and stem fully engaged on the steer tube. The two pieces were TIG welded and will be grounded down tomorrow for the final finish up. It is steel and fairly solid cuz we left 5/8" at the top for the threads that the stem cap screws into.

Nice. Getting there is half the fun. I see I need to add some tools to my potential birthday list.

Given all of the available options I don't think I personally would have gone that route, but it looks like it'll be stronger up top than anywhere else. Well done!

Yeah, it def added some extra weight, but it's solid and I'm happy with it. I also wanted to get some more time on the lathe and carving metal up sounded like more fun than just welding two pipes together and inserting them.

wow, well done. I too would not have dared that, but kudos. How much did it run you in the end? You can probably pick up a new crown/tube assembly for dirt cheap.

It cost me a growler from P.H. Woods, a brewery in Moreno Valley. I refused to allow my buddy to be paid in piss water from Anhueser Busch. I did the machining and he did the welding. Next time I will try a new steer tube, but I am happy with this method for now.
