Anyone know why I couldn't get a 29" fork and make a 69er out of this?

That's an interesting idea brian wonder if the down tube angle might be different on the 26 vs 29 frame? Might be worth a try hehe

Does anyone have a MacGuyver way to install the star nut in the steer tube?

Use the top cap bolt and a small socket. Insert the bolt through the back of the socket and threaded it into the star nut. Then place whole assembly on top of steer tube and lightly hammer on the top of the socket. You may need to alternate between tapping the different sides of the socket to make sure it's straight.

I've done this in a pinch but I would just go to a LBS and have them do this in 30sec.

Try it, I did just that with my Misfit and it turned out to be the best bike mod ever! I already had a Pace fork that had a ton of tire clearence so I took it to my LBS and tried a 29 wheel and it fit. Built a 29 wheel the next day. The bike handles better than ever and that big wheel is a godsend.

29er wheels fit most 26" rigid forks. Borrow a wheel and give it a try. If you go 29er fork, it will jack up your front end 3" instead of 1-1/2".

My 69er is leading right down that path to a full 29er.

Took it out for a spin. (sorry sniffer that I flaked on you and still went out). The frame is pretty flexy. I felt a little bob a couple of times. I ran into Quadad, Bajacabra, MT_ID, and their friend. I had the chain too loose, so that came off. I made most of powerlines. That was tough. Did the tunnels. Not bad. I skipped on the entrance and walked a couple of parts getting out cuz my legs were dead after the powerlines climb.

I'm digging the rigid fork. The only problem so far is there's a rattle in the head tube. Maybe I don't have the fork in all the way??? The bumps feel pretty much like they did with the cruddy RST I had on the old Hardrock. That fork was almost rigid. But, having the steel over all, is more smooth than the Al Hardrock was.

I'm gonna need some fatter tires, but this is working out. I'm digging it. I didn't once curse you Foo!

i've only been fs for about 6mo now, so i'm familiar with mashing. i do enjoy spinning though...

i used the 18t you gave me with the 32 that came on the cranks i got from keith. you know, it wasn't too bad. it seems 20 may be too much after i get used to it all. as it was, i was in the middle. i didn't spin air too much, and the climbs weren't horrible. i just have to get in shape. :)
