Anybody ridden SCST recently and can give a report on the thistle situation there now? Rode it about 2 months ago and was picking thorns out of my legs and arms for a few weeks afterwards...Would like to ride this weekend if they've died off somewhat.

I ride there 3x a week. The main trails are in good shape. I have been working on them off and on since January. Of course, we need more riders to ride and kill the weeds on less populated trails where it's overgrown; for the most part, it's all ridable and fun (just pick your line carefully on the trails where there are lots of weeds). If you know the trails names at SCST, the trails that are in pretty shape are as follows:

    Hole Shot
    Blue Chair
    Qualifier
    Short Cuts
Parts of No Tools (or New Tools)
    Dots
    Stitches
    0-Four

It's even worse now, Thistle everywhere, PO has gotten worse, not to mention the ticks, snakes and a mountain lion sighting!

    Best to stay away.

We rode it on Sunday and everything was in great shape (even Barrel Roll). Had a baby gopher snake sighting as well as an early tarantula sighting. Thanks for all the work out there!

Huge bigups to all that did work on SCST

Last week I noticed that some had done a good bit of work on clearing some of the trails since I last rode (months ago) but today I finally got out to powerlines and saw that even there had gotten some love.

Sincere thanks goes out to you that have worked hard on this trail, I owe you

send a private message to El Cap on here (Kirk) he does a bunch of the trail work there and might be able to shed some light on it for you or at least help repair the damage done...

I heard from a buddy that the SCST is where they dump rattle snakes? Is that true or is he pulling my leg?

Haha, the rattlesnakes! There are sure enough of them back there. I didn't see many this past year but the season before I had many encounters. I saw a Green Mohave out there, very cool.

I think everything is copacetic now. Thank you to the people that fixed it. See you guys out there and whatch out for the rattlers!

    Thanks,

    Aaron

Green Mohave rattler in san clemente? They are a desert species, only found east of the san bernardino/san jacinto mountains in true desert. They prefer very arid sparesly vegetated areas, usually creosote scrubland. Orange County and the west side of the Santa Ana Mountains/foothills, and associated coastal sage scrub and chapparal ecosystem, has 2 species locally, the red diamond (Crotalus ruber) and the southern pacific (c. oreganus helleri). Occasionally a western diamond (c. atrox) or rarely the speckled (c. mitchelli) will be seen west of the deserts but only to around elsinore.
But im basing this off of research i did back in college 12 years ago, maybe things have changed or nobody saw them here yet at the time.

I thought the same thing as with most people. I have no formal Herpetological education but I enjoy herping and learning about our local fauna and flora, on the internet and with other people. It blew my mind when I saw the snake. When I got home I went online to try to confirm. I was sure I saw a Green Mohave but when I discussed it with others they were not convinced. Visual IDs can be suspect, I would think the same thing. How many mountain lions sighting by the the general public are really bobcats or dogs? Then a boy was bit at San Mateo Camp Ground in 2012.

    http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2012...ecover-from-extremely-toxic-rattlesnake-bite/

"Doctors immediately realized the boy was bitten by a particularly nasty and toxic rattler, the Mojave Green.

Officials say a unique neurotoxin in the snake’s venom affects the human nervous system and can cause paralysis.
“It took 42 vials of anti-venom just to stabilize him,” said the boy’s father. “Normally it would just take a few … depending on the snake.”"

    42 vials!

thanks for the info aaron, if true thats very ecologically interesting (and scary!) However, i am still skeptical, especially when news reporters and doctors are involved. How many doctors say you were bitten by a brown recluse when there are no brown recluses in socal (except for a species found out in the mojave desert thats similar but rarely bites humans) and the drs even identify teh spider u bring with u as a recluse, when they are not entomologists, and they are wrong. Souther Pacific's venom can vary a bit from area to area and can contain differeing levels of neurotoxin. And people can vary in their response to venom. From the comments below the article (admittedly also to be taken with a grain of salt):
" I feel I need to correct the news reporter and or the Doctors that made a "Incorrect analyis" of the type of rattlesnake that bit this boy. The rattlesnake that bit this boy was NOT a Mojave rattlesnake; The mojave rattlesnake is not Indigenous to this particular area (Camp Penelton) of Southern California. The Mojave rattlesnake...hence the name "Mojave", rattlesnake is only Indigenous to the upper (high) deserts of Southern Califonia and all the way east to Arizona. The rattlesnake that bit this boy was a Southern Pacific rattlesnake which can have the nero-toxic venom that the mojave rattlesnake has. I wish the Doctors and or the news reporter did their research so as to properly diagnose what type of rattlesnake bit this boy and not over-hype this story. I have extensive knowledge of all 6 types of rattlesnakes that are indigenous to Southern California."
I will correct the above, however, the mohave grrn is also found further south and at lower elevations in the sonoran desert and into mexico..
Also, from Wikipedia: Crotalus oreganus helleri has a highly toxic venom that is much like mojave toxin in the way it attacks nerve endings. It also contains myotoxins and hemotoxins it can easily give a fatal bite.[SUP][8][/SUP] The venom from this snake also requires a much higher dose of Crofab, an antivenin used to treat the bite of North American pit-vipers.[SUP][9][/SUP]

Dave, i thought the toll road extension was killed 5 years ago?Are they trying it again?

Of course! They want to build 14,000 homes in rancho mission viejo.
The extension, the trippling of the substation footprint and the push for the re-start of SanO are all tied to it.

I really do appreciate the good info on the snakes, but I'd really like to know more about the bridges being knocked down.

I rode out there tonight and I'd say its not exactly copacetic to cruise up to a giant hole in the ground where there used to be a bridge. I ride out here fairly regularly and try to do my share of trailwork (got a folding shovel and machete for spring time) and I'd love to know the reasoning behind the trashing of otherwise perfectly good bridges. I'm hoping its being done at the direction of rangers because if its some local mtb hater quack I'd be pretty upset and if its another biker I'd be pissed that another rider took it into their own hands to mess with someone else's flow and good times on the trail.

I would like to know what is happening also.

Is there a bridge out? Which one?
