Just passed by a bad accident on RSM in front of Mission High School. It looks like a biker on a beach cruiser was hit by an automobile. The accident must have happened a few minutes before I arrived. The bike was badly damaged and the rider was thrown into the bushes near the sidewalk. I could see tracks from the car go up onto the sidewalk. It looks bad lot's of emergency vechicles. I hope the biker was okay.

That's it Trabuco High. Police were still at the scene just now. Rsm parkway and El Toro were detoured by PD. I saw the driver of the car on the ground with his hands on his head still at the scene. Arggh its not even safe to ride a bike on a sidewalk these days. Skid marks went all the way up onto the sidewalk.

Rip fellow rider. I rode that stretch yesterday on my commute home, and will pass it again today. That stretch of SMP between the 241 and marguerite is a bear. I always feel a sense of relief once I get past the shopping center and onto the smp climb. My thoughts go out to the family of the rider. I'll pay my respects on my ride home this afternoon.

The bicyclist was identified this morning by the coroner. RIP Eric. Some people left comments on the article blaming cyclist for accidents like this. Unbelievable.

    http://www.ocregister.com/articles/struck-500059-billings-margarita.html

MISSION VIEJO –The Orange County Coroner's Office has identified the bicyclist struck and killed Friday night on Santa Margarita Parkway. Eric Billings, 58, of Rancho Santa Margarita, was riding his bicycle in the bike lane of the road, between El Toro Road and Los Alisos Bouelvard, when he was struck by a car around 6:45 p.m., authorities said. Hast Fakhrai-Bayrooti, 39, was driving the 2003 Acura that struck and killed Billings, Lt. Joe Balicki said. Billings was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:48 p.m., officials said. Officials did not release whether or not Fakhrai-Bayrooti was arrested or cited and the Sheriff's major accident reconstruction team is investigating.

This SUCKS! I ride that section of road all the time to and from STT, Harding, Whiting etc and never feel safe. People who don't ride bikes don't know what it feels like to have a car rip past you at 50 MPH and only 6 inches away. Terrible, this guys family, friends and employees all have to pay the price.

This is awful and so sad. Based upon the comments in the Register article, the victim was a very special person and we have all lost dearly.

Why is this stretch of road said to be so dangerous? I looked at Google maps and it looks like it has a bike lane on it that is well marked. But more than one person remarked that they are afraid of this section. But from the look of the road on Google, it should be perfectly safe--if we're not safe on a road like that then something is seriously wrong.

Speed limit in the section for both streets is ~50mph and as soon as you cross over el toro, there's a very, very short merge that drivers just gun it to get into traffic without looking most of the time. Then not more than 30 yards up the road is a high school, which should be self explanatory, and as you approach Los Alisos, most people make a right there, and cut into the bike lane much earlier than they need to or should. I'm surprised more people aren't hurt in this stretch of road, it really isn't safe for anyone.

One report says that the drivers tire blew out and they lost control. We'll have to wait for the report to know for sure. If that's the case then its just pure bad luck nothing more.
