My family is planning to drive up to Lancaster next week to visit the Poppy Fields and take photos. Does anyone know if they are in bloom and if it will be worth the drive up there?
It's still really hit and miss. I drive the 138 from Lebec to Palmdale Friday through Sunday. But along the I-5 past the Tejon Pass on the right hand hills there are some spectacular Orange and Yellow Poppies. If you go, exit on Fort Tejon, loop over on the bridge to the West side, make a right on Digier Canyon Road. Drive about a mile and a half keeping the hills on the East side of the freeway in mind. A lot of people have been exiting the freeway and going there to take some awesome pics. It's pretty dramatic! I'll keep my eyes open on my way home from work tomorrow and get back to you... ~Mikie
Thanks for the heads up dirtvert! We are still going nevertheless since we will also be visiting old friends there. Hopefully we'll be able to get a few good shots.
From the desertusa.com wildflower reports, this sounds a good spot: Apr 2, 2012 Rina reports: I spotted a beautiful large display of poppies west of the Antelope Valley California Poppy Preserve area. If you continue driving west on Lancaster Road past the Poppy Preserve, you will be rewarded with a beautiful sight where 245th Street West and Avenue D meet. (Lancaster Road becomes 245th Street West. Just keep driving west).
Tandem, Don't bother with anything on Ave. D/hwy 138 aint nothin' that way. Stick to Lancaster Rd. West of the Poppy Reserve for your best bet. ~Mikie
