They really should change the category from "Beginner" to "Novice" because most of the people that race Beginner are not first time or inexperienced racers. The B3s seem to get faster every year, exept me, I'm a lot slower than I was last year. If its any consolation, a few have already moved up to S3 this year. The guy who finished 3rd in S3 "Ben Spurgeon" won the B3 race in week #2 this year. Also, the top 3 overall at the end of the year are automatically moved to Sport next year (though Top 5 might be more appropriate). e.g. The guy who finished 2nd in S3 "Shawn Voorhees" won the B3 overall last year.

Well anyone averaging under 20 min a lap on Tuesdays course should be considering a step IMO....Hell I might just say F*** it and do an extra lap and move up to S3...I'll still will finish 30th something but I atleast know I'm not sand-bagging

So very valid points but remember, beginners race a shortened course. You can't compare lap time for lap time from beginners and sports. However, sandbagging/cheating/cutting/blurring the lines will always exist in racing.

If you can get two laps at 20 minutes then you can get three. Maybe not four, but three...

I have buddies racing and finishing in the top 5 in Beginner 2 and 3 and I finish around top 5 in Sport 2. When I compare their Strava segments to mine for the common parts of the course (the first climb, tree section, etc), their times are significantly slower than mine. To me that means they aren't ready to move up. There's no reason to move them up so they can finish around 20th in Sport 2 or 3.

And as someone mentioned, the Beginners are running a different course than Sport - Pro. I don't think this weeks was too much shorter, but it certainly seemed faster (they cut out the single track along the hill and instead just went straight).

I think the OTH crew does a great job in managing the classes and ensuring they are as fair and evenly matched as possible. I was pumped they didn't bump anyone out of Sport 2. It is super competitive and I am really enjoying it. I may get my butt kicked by a few of the guys, but it just makes me ride harder during the week. Plus, we have seen how someone will run away one week and be battling for 5th the next. Its just how it works out.

I was barely over the 20 minute lap time on Tues and I am a true beginner. Only been riding a year and a half but trained my a$$ off all winter to compete at OTH this year with no prior race experience. I don't mind guys faster than me like what we have now in B3, it provides me the motivation to train harder to do better. Yeah, they are fast but if you want to do well, train hard. If you want to have fun, just show up and have fun and try not looking at the times afterwards. With regards to Ben Spurgeon, he moved himself up to Sport. OTH did not make him do it, so HUGE props to Ben for wanting to compete at a higher level.

See y'all out there at OTH! I am having a BLAST!
