I think I am ready to start building up my Socom. Of course I am in need of advice or just help.

    This is what I have:

    1) Fork
    2) Rear Shock
    3) Wheels
    4) Headset
    5) Brakes
    6) Seat Post
    7) Seat

I need to get my fork painted (black) any advice or references?

Can I start building with what I have? Any advice on parts for the Socom. Parts I yet don't have?

Anyone want to spend time with me on this build? I'll buy you lunch. Hey, I am only 13 so maybe Mc Donalds.

    Thank You,
    Julia12

    build away!!

Start with the post so you have a good clamping spot to put it in the stand.

I don't have a stand or tools. This is another reason I need help. I do want to learn how to build it. The post is already on the bike.

You can get the headset pressed in too. It looks like the only thing missing is a drivetrain, bars and stem.
I think there may be a swapmeet coming up soon, so that would be a great opportunity to get some of the remaining parts at a good price.
    Good luck with th build.

throw it together and see what is next!

if you can get to la, mom included, ill throw it together for you.

theres a little shop called the bike oven that lets you use their tools for 5 bucks an hour. you might wanna see if there is a co-op near your house that can help too.

    seatpost, then seat

    headset, then fork

once you get a stem, things will start to come together, because then you can add that to the fork, then mount the handlebars to the stem, and brakes to handlebar. Then wheels and it'll start to look like a bike. :)

    Worry about the crankset/shifters/derailleurs last

You'll need cranks, stem, handlebar, rear derailleur, shifter, chainguide, pedals, tires and grips. I may have everything you need depending on your current fork and what you want.

I would suggest something in the Shimano XT or SRAM X-9 range for your drivetrain and a Gamut P20 for the chainguide. Depending on what you currently have and what your budget is, you can build it up in the mid to upper thirties weight range.

I'll be more than happy to help you out with your build.

I would help out too if you need. I need to get the wheels to you this weekend. If the headset is installed it will be pretty easy.

Unfortunately, the Socom is not compatible with a front derailleur. I've heard it can be done, but I haven't found anyone with experience shoe horning one in there though.

Hi Jules. Not sure where you live, I take it SA means Santa Ana. If that's the case, I'll have a few hours to kill tomorrow afternoon to help you install some parts, assuming your parent(s) will be home. I don't have a press for the headset, but I've got tools for just about everything else. You, or your parent(s) can shoot me a PM.

If you need help wrenching, I can also help. I've got tools for everything but pressing the headset. also a stand...

but basically, I'd get the whole thing together, and then start worrying about things like painting forks. that way you can ride it (and race it!), and paint it on a weekend that isn't a fontana weekend. plus, isn't your fork already black?

also, that syncros stem you got with the fork should work great. it'll let you run OS bars (bit stiffer/stronger).

so yeah, you can get started now. throw the seat/seatpost on (grease the post lightly). snug up bolts, but don't worry about adjusting too much now. also, good time to get a seat collar if you don't have one.

next, go with the fork. get your mom to take you to the path and get the headset pressed. also might want to have them install the crown race (unless it's a really cool split-ring one like on my reign). that way you won't need to worry about ovalizing the crown race. then install the fork. clean the bearings etc before putting them on, and grease anywhere 2 metal surfaces are touching.

throw the fork on, and make sure you've got room for suspension movement on the fork. (205mm from the top of the wiper to the bottom of the crown for the boxxer iirc)

put the stem/any needed spacers on and preload the headset. get a handlebar and put that on as well, so you can mount up brake levers and such

bolt on the brake calipers loosely (don't need to be tight right now), and route the cables up the frame to the bars. zip tie the cables, bolt the levers on the bars in the rough place they needa be in.

then you can put on the wheels and adjust the brakes.

that's about it with the parts listed. if you've got any specific questions, PM me and I can go into more detail for ya (I'm bored a lot and don't mind).

    Julia,

What else do you need. I have some stuff you might be able to use. I'm not riding this weekend or next so I might be able to help you out. Let me know what you need.
