Due to life, and what are now 15 month old twins, I've been off a DH bike for nearly 3 years, but I've been wanting to get back on one again. Mike over at Fullerton Bikes made me an offer on a Giant Glory that I couldn't refuse. And with Giant redesiging their Glory for 2013 with a slacker head angle and lower bottom bracket, it seems like it's exactly what I was looking for. When it came time to build it, I didn't deviate from my standard parts spec: Fox fork, Shimano brakes and drivetrain, and Chris King hubs. With a build like that, there's not much else I could want. The bike is sitting at 37.5 pounds, as shown. I think I might like Shitty's scale better. How can you not go big with a Giant and not go big with the bars or fork? (Easton Havoc carbon 35 mm bars/stem and Fox 40s) Shimano stoppers only slow you down, so I don't plan on using them much. But they're there if I need them. What's awesome is that Giant includes and FSA angle headset (angled bearings, not the crappy gumbles that Cane Creek uses) and a standard FSA headset. I couldn't help but swap out the aluminum headset bearing cover with a carbon version from FSA. Shimano drivetrain: Check! (The Renthal chainring may get swapped out at some point.) Giant uses some super light tubing, so I felt that I needed to add a carbon downtube frame guard. Note that the cable and brake line aren't in their standard position. They also needed to be protected. I routed the derailleur cable and brake line down the top of the downtube, under the shock, then under the link. It took a while of cycling the suspension without the shock to determine the best routing. I also put some sleeving over the derailleur cable housing where it enters the swing arm to protect it. A titanium coil spring will come later after I determine which one I want to use. The blue Shimano crank end cap is from Reset Racing. I bought a bunch of these in different colors on a previous trip to Japan. Oddly, I haven't seen them here in the states. .
Aaaaaahhh yeeAaAaaahhh! :bang: :bang: :bang: - Weight? - Curious what your opinion is/will be regarding the 35mm bar- let us know (ridiculously stiff) - Does this mean you are coming out of retirement? - Mike wanted to see (2) friends riding Glory's in 2013 (Christmas came early for the man) Congratulations!
Weight: 37.5 as shown (will swap out to a ti coil) Retirement? I never retired! But as you know, I have a few things that need to be done before I can get back into racing shape. Honestly, I've never had handlebars that I felt were too stiff. Perhaps I'm just not that sensative to that - and probably even less with an 8" fork. I doubt I'll have any complaints about these bars, other than getting used to the 800 mm width. I may want to cut them down. I was hoping to ride it tomorrow, but I the guy who I was supposed to go with hasn't contacted me. Unfortunately, it may be a couple weeks until the bike will see some dirt.
That looks real sweet Lee! I'm going to need to see your cable/hose reroute. I think I need to copy yours, looks super clean!! Let's get em dirty! Mine weighed in at 35.8lbs. (Dino weighed it twice) 13.5 BB
What tires are you using? From what I recall, I think we have similar parts spec, so I'm wondering where mine gained weight.
I'm running Maxxis DHF's front and rear. XT brakes. Also running the E13 LG1+ hubs which were lighter than my previous Hadley's. Oh and XTR trail pedals.
I built mine up today too! Lee who makes that frame guard. Looks rad and I'll also want a closer look at that cable routing!
Btw, thomaswildchild...did you just build your Glory too? I saw it on fb tho. Congrats on the bikes guys....enjoy!
Awesome Lee....just Ef'n awesome! Love your attention to detail and damn the cost, just the way it should be. Enjoy the new ride!
I see you stuck to the budget build. Very nice build though, but those red hubs don't really match.
Lee. That is a World Cup build for sure. You told me when got the frame nothing crazy. ( yeah right) I should have known better. Well you made my week posting those photos. Thanks again for your support and friendship for 32 years but who is counting. Haha. Can't wait to get mine done so we can do a few Laguna runs. And maybe Doublewide will join us and you guys can show me a few speed secrets. Thanks again Lee. Your on the top of my list for sure! ---------------
