I just got a new road bike and want to get out on SART and I bought my wife a new bike as well (hybrid) I was wonding if this would be a good place to take her to ride. I dont want to be in the way of faster riders or for her to feel intimidated by people zooming past her. Is this a good idea? I am looking for somewhere semi flat for her (we live in the Corona Hills and all there is, is hill around us.
IT's perfect. The path is split in half like a two lane highway, so just stay to the right and faster riders will go around you guys. That's where I take my gf when she gets the itch for a "real," bike ride.
depending on the time of the day, SART has a lot of roadies on Saturdays. IMO, Peters Canyon Trail in Irvine to Back Bay in Newport Beach is a better and nicer route
Just a suggestion... Since you live in Corona - consider the Upper SART trail from Norco to San Bernardino. It's out and back so you can turn around anytime. It's alittle bit of everything... some hills in the very beginning but it then gets fairly flat. It's quieter than the Lower SART trail (Green River to the Beach) with less traffic and alot of the traffic are newbies, beginners and families. God places ot stop along the way with restrooms etc. I generally start at the Hidden Valley Wilderness area but there a park off Jurupa that gets you pass the hill. If you do the nature center to Waterman (the turnaround) distance is 36 miles... afterwards lots of nice places to eat off 6th in Norco - I like Reyna's Tacos and The Rodeo Cafe... from the 91 take the 15 north to 6th St., exit go right. Turn left at California and follow the road to the Hidden Valley Nature Center...turn left and continue all the way to the dead end and park. The bike trail is right there...
Awesome Pam thanks!!! Sounds perfect, and for myself as well. Only have rode my road bike around the neighborhood.. Alot different than my Mtn bike....
But it does end at Harvard requiring a 2 or 3 mile street ride (has a bike lane) to where it starts again at Barranca. Not that big a deal but seeing as she's new…
Just let her know that some fast guys may pass her--some with no warning, some with mellow warning, and some with over-the-top "bike back!" or "on your left!" The latter are Freds (cycling dorks) and she should just giggle at those ones.
The tried & true "on your left" at least lets you know someone is about to whiz by you at escape velocity. Fred-ness occurs when they shout it overloud and then die off and get passed...and repassed. Ad nauseam.
Just wanted to say thank you again Pam for this info...My wife and I have been out there multiable times, never much traffic. Its great for her!!
