I have been on the intense forum on mtbr, because I am thinking about getting rid of my rohloff and going to a HS.

There are two threads describing how the HS does not effect the ride:

sorry, it was just my understanding that the suspensions were only optimized for a certain gear size, and I've heard from a good few people I know personally (and therefore trust more than random folks on mtbr) that the VPPs don't pedal particularly well with a granny gear. if it works, it works though.

let's get back to the topic at hand: how is santa neil going to get us all uzzis for christmas? oh wait, this IS a 951 thread :-k

is it the CADENCE or speed/force of pedaling on VPP bikes that causes them to not pedal well in granny, or is it actually the gear size?

with a transmission (HS), the rear of the bike wont feel anything different, the only thing the bike might see different is chain tension (due to the gear size)

Now that this thread is completely derailled, I'll pile on with a question of my own -

Uzzi VP with Hammershmidt - any issues with the smaller bash guard protecting that lower link on real steep rollers with an abrupt edge?

seeing as craig approves of the derailment, I don't feel bad about answering.

as far as I know, it's a matter of how the chain is pulling on the back of the bike. with a smaller chainring, it is pulling from lower down in relation to the pivot. the difference and angle, and where the chain is in relation to the pivots is the cause of the problems (if any).

I'm sure cadence has something to do with it as well. lower gear=higher cadence=>more bobbage just due to leg mass moving around.

there's way more to this, but I don't feel like going into it at the moment. :?:
