Was out riding this morning when I heard a copter nearby. Thought it was an injured rider or hiker over by Rattlesnake, but as I got closer to Ridge Park I see the copter lifting a large bundle of dirt and plants. Then they dropped it by the start of the old (unmentionable) trail that dropped down into Deer Canyon. Once I get up to Ridge Park, I see a Zoo of News crews and police blocking the street.

    Turns out it was this:

Thousands of marijuana plants are being removed from rugged Orange County mountains Friday in what authorities expected would be an hours-long operation. Between 2,500 and 4,000 plants were found in the Muddy Canyon area of the Laguna Wilderness Park, south of the 73 Freeway toll road, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

More curious how many years they got away with it before the man found the patch. Normally plots start out small and the growers get greedy and plant more each year....they don't start with 4,000 plants. I think it strange that they did not wait until someone showed up to bust. The growers must have figured out that the grow was being watched.

I'm guessing biking isn't allowed. That would mean no one to interfere with he harvest. I suspect the grower is whomever decided to close the trails. Indict them. Then open the trails.

Yes you can ride into Muddy Canyon. Half way up No Name Ridge in El Moro there is a fire road gate to the left (marked access to Muddy Canyon) that will take you to the bottom of Muddy Canyon then up to the gated community in Pelican Ridge. Not much reason to go over there unless you want to check out the very big houses or you know where said "un-named trail" is. I ride thru there once in awhile.
