Sort of wish this was a bike related injury/illness, but then again, maybe not. Last night I started to get a sore throat so I did all the things I normally do when getting a sore throat.., gargle with warm salt water, apply throat spray, take a Contact to help me sleep. Got woken up about 2:30am cause I started choking, I felt fine if I stood up so I wasn't too worried yet. Then I looked in the mirror! Turned out my uvula was swollen and was starting to block my airway so I drove to the ER to get looked at. After pumping me with steroids and Benadryl and other stuff, the swelling didn't go down so I had to stay overnight for observation.

Turned out it may be an allergic reaction to shellfish which I did have some shrimp last night with the skin still on the tail(normally served that way). I'm aware I am allergic to shellfish, but it's not the meat of the shellfish like crab, lobster, shrimp and others that I'm allergic to but the shell it self. Anytime I touch it I get the typical allergic reaction like itchy watery eyes, rashes, stuffy nose. A dose of Benadryl usually cures it. This time none of those and my uvula swelled up and was making me choke. I know allergies can get worse as you get older or go away all together. I'm hoping its something else cause I love seafood too much.

I'm out of the ER now, but have to stay overnight for observations in CICU. My white blood cell is really high right now according to my nurse so I may also be fighting off a virus as well. They won't know till the blood work comes back as well as the swab. Really bad timing cause I planned on getting in at least 1 solid training ride before the VQ, but now I won't be released till probably tomorrow. I haven't done much training cause of work and now this, but it is what it is. Hoping to see you all next week at the Pow Wow!

Glad you caught it before you had a more serious reaction!
H2oChick now carries an Epipen and we've had an interesting time or two getting her to the ER.#-o

Bummer Gene. Hopefully, it heals quick. There is nothing like the sensation of not breathing. I suffer from throat spasms sometimes and it scares the crap out of me.

Though if I was allergic to any part of something I'd stay away from it all.

Well hell Gene, at least now I might see you a little longer Saturday instead of just at the start and finish!

Seriously though, hope everything is ok by morning and they're able to release you. Kinda crazy that your uvula swelled up, never heard of anything like that before. Hope there's no complications from the virus-fighting too, and you're ready to roll next weekend.

Good God - that's awful. Glad you got help in time. Heal up quick Gene. Maybe I'll post some illegal trail names to give you something to do while recuperating!

Sorry to hear you are having a health scare. But of all the things it could have been, the ones you walk away from unscathed are the best. A missed day of training wasn't going to make or break your ride anyway....you'll be fine. And yes, it is what it is.
    Get better real soon.

That really sucks, Looks like you cleared the Hump as of right now. White blood cells is another obstacle. However, i rather have that allergy than my problem. My allergy is Bee Stings and they do get worse as you get older.

I know what you are going trough, in regards of training and racing. Eats you up alive not being out here. At this point your ready to pull all that $hit from your arm and jump on your bike =)

Man, hope you feel better dude and glad your alright. Like kioti once told me, a couple of days here and there off the bike is better than a life threatening illness, so don't push it that hard, there will be plenty of more vq's and races. Goodluck.
