I guess I should be glad I haven't had something like this to post sooner. I went out to do an extra lap at the Luge yesterday evening before joining up with the Thursday night Path ride for a second lap. I was making good time on my solo lap, until I lost it and my front wheel washed out towards the end of that loose, rocky descent before you get to the flag. I hadn't even made it to the fun Luge downhill yet! (Which isn't nearly as fun when you're sore and bleeding.)

I was going just under 20 when it happened, which was fast enough to crash, think "ow that hurt", and then think "Oh sh*t, I'm still sliding! This is really going to hurt!"

By the time I stopped sliding I had gouged my right forearm, had road rash all over my right arm, ribs and hip, and a seriously swollen right hip.

By the time I had finished a mellow, but painful run down the luge and back to the car, I randomly ran into Bvader who was just leaving the parking lot. I had only met him once before, so I didn't recognize him at first. As he was starting to drive off, he saw my injuries and offered to help out. He was much better prepared than I was and had a first aid kit. Thanks to him, we were able to clean it off and bandage it up enough for me to make it home without bleeding all over my car.

Thank you, Bvader! It's always great to run into other STR riders when you need a hand.

A couple hours later, I was in the ER getting 9 stitches and having a ton of off-road rash thoroughly scrubbed out. Good times.

I think it's time for me to stop living in denial thinking that I won't crash that bad, and buy some knee and elbow pads, carry some first aid supplies with me, and keep a first aid kit in the car. I'm just glad there are no broken bones, it could have been worse.

Anyway, here is the obligatory pic from the ER before they stitched it up. Not as bad as many I've seen, but I know the rules: pics or it didn't happen. Maybe someday I'll figure out how to post the go pro vid of the crash on here too.

Sorry to hear. Heal up quick and keep the rubber side down rather than the flesh side.

Crashed at that very same spot before as well, but luckily only escaped with a semi scraped up right elbow. Plenty of travel first aid kids available to choose from that can be stashed away in the hydration pack or even a cargo pocket. Road rash can be serious business if not properly taken care of. Heal up bro.

Hey man, Heal up... Yeah those gouges were pretty deep I have been / am cautious about saying stitches are needed or " It looks bad" at the trailhead, had a couple dudes go pale, my approach is to assess , patch up and get them on the way to home / doc...

Heal up and keep those stitches clean!

    See ya out there!

Matt!!! I was chewing up my forearms and elbows pretty good for awhile. I wore pads for awhile but don't know :-0 Keep an eye out for any pink or red streaks heading up from the wounds. I'm sure they told you that at the hospital. Heal up quickly!

Good call. I still had the adrenaline going, but that could have easily been me going pale. My wife took one look at me when I got home and told me she wasn't cleaning that and to get back in the car, we're going to the ER.

You're right, I forgot the important part in the original post. The bike's fine! The only casualty I've found so far is one of those little plastic arms mounting the GoPro to the handlebar. I'm just glad I had a zip tie on it too so I didn't have to search for it after the crash.

Haha! Between that and the ER nurse saying I look young for 37, I'm feeling better already! I'm sure my wife won't let it go to my head.

Ditto for me but didnt really crash often, then no pads for several years. I went down yesterday at SCST, elbow, knee scrapes, no stitches needed. I haven't crashed for a long time, was so ticked I couldn't clip out in time with that "slow motion" feeling as I'm going down.
