I suggest looking at the mass production companies rather then bouteque due to price. But always keep an eye out cause there are always deals to be had!

A Specialized Pitch from the Path and you will still have some spare change to buy a helmet, shorts, jersey, etc.

Saw a low mile XL Heckler in the Marketplace...

$1500 really wont get you much in the places that matter (Drivetrain, Shock, brakes) in a new bike. For that price just pick up a nice used one and be realistic in your expectations.

Kona HeiHei 29? I saw one at the Path for ~1600. Not sure the sie though.

My buddy is 6'4" and he rides a 22" I think. Not a true AM bike as the travel is 4" front and 3.5" back but it's pretty capable bike.

If they are interested in a used bike, I have an 07 Rocky Mountain Slayer SXC50 that I'll be putting up for sale soon that would probably be in their price range. The size is Large. I paid $3400 for it new less than two years ago. It is a great bike and I dont want to sell it, but my son needs braces, the car needs work, ect, ect...

    PM for details if interested.

I have a 08 Pitch Pro, and the thing is a beast! Climbing up, you can lock out for fork, flip on ProPedal on your shock in about two seconds; then pound your way up. The Tires that come on it are 2.35 but they look like 2.4+ because of their big volume, great traction at 35 PSI for me. Climbing up, you will stay stuck to the ground without any worries of lifting up the head of the bike. On the way down you have 5 Inch of travel to abuse as-well as a superslack head angle. The only mandatory thing to change (in my opinion) is the seat, which is relatively uncomfortable- lacking channels.

I was in the same boat as you... I first bought a gt force 3.0 and hated it. Seriously that bike was miserable. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Sold it and bought an 08 pitch pro from the path for a song and couldn't be happier.

I'd recon an 08 pitch comp would do you darn well. I've seen them go for 800-1000 on ebay and CL and i'd bet you can get them new in a shop for 1200 or there abouts.

Take advice from some one that was recently in your shoes... Save up another month and extend your budget a bit. There is this weird spot in the 1200-1500 range where you end up with a half decent frame and terrible components. go for 1700 and everything will be peachy.

At 6'5" I cant imagine a bike less than XL. I'm 6'2" and 230lbs. I've got a GT force (L) and a Pitch XL. They have their place, but for long rides an xl for sure I say.

I suspect your much furher down the road than this propective buyer.

Heck, I bought a GT force 3.0 a couple years ago that has better brakes than my Pitch pro, juicy 3's, WOW what a compromise for a bike they wanted 2700$ for.
I quickly upgraded to XT's which I think are great.

My pitch was only worth the 1700$ on sale I felt and it has been worth it.

Buying used has it's rewards.. just takes time, patience and connections to get you there. Buyer beware.:?:
