Ok so here is my dilema. I just stared racing and I'm using a speicialized rockhopper comp 07. Unfortunetly my budget didn't allow me to purchase a better bike, I have some money now but still no enough to purchase an epic. so I am thinking of buying the GT Zaskar expert (not the carbon frame but the regular frame) at performance. I have a pair of Mavic cross rides to put on. Would I be O.K racing beginer to sport level on it and does any one know the weight on it?

I race sport on a 26lb Specialized Stumpy FSR:) its all up to you! I like plush 5"+ of travel I'm sure the GT would be plenty of bike at that level its more about he engine then the chassis at that level :)

zaskars are a sweet frame! thats a great hardtail frame to start on, and over time build up with better components - but that frame is rad.

I'd say - Go for it.

If you're buying just the frameset, you can build it up any way you want. Realistically, you could be in the 21-22 pound area without too much of a problem. I've been drooling over the Carbon version

I had a GT for years - loved it and couldn't kill it. Good Luck!

Word. I've had a Zaskar Comp since '99 and raced it through 2006, winning the Rim Nordic Beginner class on it.

I've beat the crap out of it and it still rocks. With cheap wheels and a Manipoo Mach 5 fork (yes from '99!) it probably weighs 20 pounds...maybe.

I have buddies racing 30+ lb bikes. At beginner and even at sport you are fine. You are going to get beat by $500 bikes and $5000 bikes such is life. Ride what you can afford and have fun.

I'm wondering what's the bigest difference between zascar aluminum and Avalanche frames. Geometry is about same. Is zascar dramatically lighter?

If not much difference, for the same price you can get the Avalanche and a pair of lighter than crossride wheels.

How much difference is there between the Rockhopper and the Zaskar? The Rockhopper used to be a pretty solid bike. I still have a 97 version that I keep wanting to ressurect for light trails and some road riding. It's a sweet little frame. I loved it back in the day and was what got me started in mtn biking in the first place.
If I wasn't such a capitalist pig I'd probably still be riding it...but you know the whole bigger better concept was calling to me.

I'll bet with a lil TLC my 97 Rockhopper will ride just as good as my 06 FSR or 06 Heckler or Chameleon! Just ride it like you stole it and you're good to go! ;-) Save the money to upgrade parts on the Rockhopper. Just my two cents worth.

Frame material. 6000 series vs 7000 series aluminum. The geometry between them is almost exactly the same. A Zaskar Pro should be stock 23 pounds. An Avalanche 1.0 - somewhere in the range of 26-27. I had my old GT up to around 30 or so - beefy.

but 4 lbs difference could not come from frame, can it? I'd guess it would mostly come from fork, wheels, BB/cranks and other components.

btw, here's what I found on the 6000 vs 7000 aluminum difference:

Ok, I'm done jacking your thread. sorry 'bout that.

What is the weight difference between your RH frame and the prospective GT frame? If it's nothing too significant I vote you put your money towards a nice wheelset that you can move onto an even better racing frame when the money comes.

    What does your RH weight?

Probably not. When I broke down my old 6061 al GT frame before I donated it to a local charity - it weighed about 6.5 pounds.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread.
