Depends on how bad the tear is and how much work they have to do to repair it. My Rotator Cuff Tear was extensive and the healing process was a long one. After surgery I could not even lift my arm.

Save up and ride a road bike until the healing process is over before playing in the dirt again?

Could you tell me what surgery is like? What do you mean the healing process is a long one? My mother said, if athroscopic surgery goes well then I'll need to go to physical therapy regularly.

    Uh oh...Vicodin is taking effect.

My rotator cuff was damaged (not torn) when I fractured my scapula just before Easter. While I'm back to riding and have nearly 100% range of motion in most directions, it hurts like no other when I try to throw something. A simple toss doesn't hurt at all. My therapist has me doing VERY LOW intensity tennis serving motions to help loosen up the area and it IS working well. Physical therapy is your friend. Be patient, it will probably take a long time especially if your arm requires immobilization. Good luck.

I didn't tear anything but dislocated my arm 3 weeks ago going into 4th week. Didn't get surgery and I'm still in pain and can't move my arm. I wouldn't suggest riding anything til you go through physical therapy which will probably take a while. Coming from a dude who dislocated his arm maybe 5x and a surgery which 'helps' prevent this kind of accident. :(

I tore my rotator cuff about 9yrs ago. I also had the laproscopic surgery so they made 3 small incisions one in the front of my shoulder, on in the back, and one on the side. After the surgery I had to ice my shoulder regularly with this special Ice Therapy Machine.

Post surgery I had to keep my arm immobile for about 3-4 weeks, so I had to wear an arm sling. After that I had to go through 3-4 months of physical therapy to get my mobility, and range of motion back. I was also given elastic bands to use at home to build strength, and I was taught various exercises to get my range of motion back. One was to put my hand flat on the wall in front of me and slowly walk my fingers up the wall as far as I could go. Total it took about 6 months to be 80-90%. I never did get back to 100% and I usually get sore after lifting weights at the gym, or any strenuous work with my shoulder.

I had rotator cuff surgery 4 years ago. It was a little more extensive than arthroscopic. I wore a sling and iced it a ton. I wasn't able to lift my arm at all for a few weeks (it's amazing how much we get used to doing mundane actions, like getting a coffee mug out of a cabinet, washing my hair, etc. Those things were hard to re-teach myself how to do for the first few weeks).
I would highly recommend telling your physical therapist what your goals are (I told mine I wanted to be back to work in a month, on a bike asap, and be able to surf/swim asap). She was harsh, but it did the trick. I was back to work in 3 weeks, back to mt-biking in 2 1/2 months, and back to surfing in under 4 months. The surgery was very successful, as was the recovery, and I feel like I have a brand new shoulder now.

    wishing you a speedy recovery.

I would suggest seeing a sports medicine doctor/ortho. They will have you up and riding in half the time of a "regular/normal "doctor that has no ideal of how to "heal" active people. I say find out who works on the baseball players of LAAnaheimDucks and let them work on you.

My mother said we are waiting for approval from the health insurance company for a specific sports orthopedic surgeon. She doesn't believe it'll get approved as the primary care doc needs to refer us to a specific approved partner. :( There goes my pitching arm.

I was just curious why I can't ride now. I have complete motion control while my arm is lowered. As long as I don't lift anything, or lift my arm up I'm fine. I just rode up mathis this morning, and whoa what a climb. Rode down Rockit really slowly. LOL. The really hot chich prolly thought I was a newbie. Wait, I AM A NEWBIE. I should have given her number. WOnder if she's a cougar ;-] I mean the ortho doc doesn't know everything right??? I really don't see the harm in riding now. I hope my mother doesnt find out. Let me tell you, I'll be cooked geese when she's done with me. Oh yeah, I live right next to the trails anyway.

    Is this kid for real?

Injuries to your joints especially your rotator cuff are something that shouldn't be taken lightly. If you are young which I assume your are after reading several of you ridiculous threads, it's best to listen to your doctor and take the proper steps to have a successful rehab or you will have some serious problems down the line.

I have damaged my knee's, shoulders and just about everything in between over the years and believe me even with proper surgery's and rehab I still have issues. You may feel invincible now but as you age those injuries catch up quickly and I'm not that old...seriously!

So ummmm like ya if you like going real fast down blue whatever now and want to continue to do so take it down a notch and recover then work to obtain the proper skills on your bike. Everyone starts somewhere and wasn't an amazing rider their first day on a mountain bike Just my .02

I raced BMX and dirt jumped for years but I am still learning on a mountain bike know your limits it will Keep you still doing what you love...riding.

FYI... I have a torn or tear in my rotator cuff. The orthopedic surgeon immediately put me on physical therapy to avoid a frozen shoulder. I should have surgery in about 2-3 weeks.

In my case 1 month in an arm sling, and 4-6 months in physical therapy.

    Hope this helps.
