That 1 x 10 you describe is the set up on the bike I borrowed. I thought it was 1 x 11--the placebo effect...I was thinking I had a 42 I was shifting into, lol.

    David,

Maybe this can help you, i tried searching on this site and there were no sticky on the Subject. This is my report for i was going on field experience. I started with stock 26/39 and stock cassette. After research, i decided to pull the trigger and go 1x at the cheapest route possible. XX1 with its own stock 32ring and kept stock cassette that of 36/12. After testing/results, i needed more top end speed and more power, i purchased 34ring with alloy 36/11 problem solved. Before this, it allowed to strengthen my legs for such set up

After months of riding 34 and 32ring, i notice faster times and learned how to utilize my cassette efficiently. On a side note - Don't set your mind on bail out if all hell breaks loose and there is no trigger on left hand side of the bars - for the gearing is in the Legs. I treat granny/bail gear accordingly, the last soldier, 36cog. My personal favorite set is 34/36ring with 11cog group set or 32ring with stock cassette 12/36 for starters. But this is just me.....

Hope this helps you, but i do (sometimes) miss the BIG ring 39 from my old 2x. I climbed all of Harding and Black* on this ring, bit of a burn tho- After results, my times were almost the same on 39-34 and 32 ring (just a thought).

Looking at other people's gearing, it seems that you basically dropped the granny ring up front and strengthened your body to compensate. And you seem to imply that you are still seeking more strength to trade more climbing gears for higher top gears. :D

Or we can wait for a Shimano-quality wide range cassette to become available.
