Maybe the park is just taking extra precautions..., some people are very allergic to bee stings, but I guess none of you have had a severe allergic reaction before, it's not pretty.

My wife is allergic and has been hospitalized because of it. That's one of many reasons why she doesn't mountain bike. I understand precautions, so maybe the orange sign (that's blocking the trail now) w/ a sign that says something like "heavy bee activity ahead, use caution" and let people make their own decision. I guess I'm just a little tired of the government telling me what's best for me, even if this is small potatoes.

I'd rather see it closed for bees than maintenance - That trail does not need more maintenance, except maybe to try to narrow it in a few spots to keep it from turning into a freeway. It's already lost the singletrack feel for most of its length. I agree with Gene about the concern for safety though, and I'm guessing maybe a hive got disrupted or fell on/near the trail. So do they just close the trail indefinitely? Relocate the bees?

CarbonLegs - thanks for the pic. It looks like the barriers and tape have moved a bit since I passed through. I hope folks other than the rangers (or beekeepers?) aren't going around.
And what that pic doesn't show is the soul-sucking little b***h of a climb that you get detoured on to! In about 10 years of riding Whiting I think I'd ridden Line Shack in that direction once, and that was enough!

^^ That Climb was good, reminded me of pain divide, never done till this morn. I was testing a 34ring (1x10) that i have been playing with for training. Good run tho-

I did not know about the move, I did see guys up Dread, so i told my self, it cant be shut all the way to Gate 5 @ Portola. Looks to be closed for a very small segment. I did look over and saw a bunch of metal frames of some sort between the Detour and well before the Gate, dunno.

    Thanks.

No there was definitely some freshly turned dirt through the top turns, especially all the breaking bumps following that first drop. A built up water bar or two as well. There is one surprise puddle in the new re-route area further down though, heads up! First real rain since that area got built up, needs a drainage rework.
