The worst thing would be if people start cutting their own trails around the sandy sections. As JamR said, give it some time.

Just gotta jump in on this one. I rode it this morning for the first time. I'm with KWH...just ride it and let time take over. It's open and that's a start.

And...when dealing with sand, speed and forward momentum is your friend. Drop into a lower gear and keep spinning...it isn't that hard. I'm far from a good sand rider but except for 1 or 2 sections, I only had to stop for others today. There...now go have fun.

  4. Yeah the camelback idea is probally not worth it. I brought down 3 gallons of water an poured it by that rock section it seemed like it helped very little, but maybe if I did it like 20 times more it would help. Not sure if I want to make all that effort for so little its doing. haha

yeah I guess its not that bad, but water would help for sure!

Not to down play your efforts guys but extra water in camelbaks won't do a thing. You would need water trucks to make a difference. It won't be long before people start whining about how muddy it is. Whether you ride it or walk it, just be glad you can go in and do either.

Some tires just do not do good in sand. If you ride there a lot and you can live with the extra weight get some wider tires and don't stop pedaling.

If you don't do alot of gnarly trails the Maxxis Advantage 2.4 tires will float across sand without any weight penalty.

I have an idea...how about those that work or volunteer for a government agency or landholding trust put that information in their posts so their views can be independently evaluated with full information in mind.

Okay I rode it tonight. Cattle Pond, Mustard, to the bench, back to 4 corners and Cactus.

There lots of sand. So what, it's actually kinda fun trying to clean all the sand pits. It's a helluva workout though! Made it through all but one. The Cattle pond steppie section is now a sand runway. And Cactus doesn't have much singletrack anymore. But it's still a fun place to ride after work for a social loop.

And for the 29er crowd: the Weirwolf *2.55*, while not being remotely close to a true 2.55, cuts through sand exceptionally well. In fact, it does most things exceptionally well; I love that tire (misleading sizing notwithstanding).

    Sand

The happiness I have with Whiting being open again out weighs the annoyance of the sand. The more we all ride the trail, the sooner the sand will get packed down...so start riding people, because the sand sucks.

    P.S. Forgive me if I mis-spelled anything

    Quick note on Whiting

    Just a quick note...
Rode Whiting again last Saturday and it si soooo much more ridable than on grand re-opening weekend.
The trails are packing nicely and the sand traps become easier each time.

I agree, I rode it today for the first time since riding it at the grand re-opening and it is already much better.

I agree with everyone on the sand. It's kind of fun in a weird, challenging way. One thing I don't understand is, why they decided to take every technical aspect that Whitting had to offer, away? It seems like they re-routed everything in almost a straight line. Let's hope Aliso never catches fire.

first time doing whiting loop yesterday, the sand sucked, but I think it's definitely clean-able with the right speed adn gear. definitely more of a challenge than it used to be, I kind of like it, although I didn't clean most of them.

I also like the new trail sections right now, soft and squirrely, will be boring when they get packed down.

Hope they plan on opening old cactus trail back up again, I hope this is not an excuse to close it forever...

Overall a good after work or social loop! I'm glad to have the option again :bang:
