whiting ranch opened yeah but...

So I rode whiting today, yeah I was so happy to be back and it was awesome, but since I ride here 3 or more times a week I cant see myself dealing with all the sand in the beginning that many times. Just today it was a pain having to walk. Any one no if there is anything being done to help this, I will be glad to help with any trail maintenance.:?:

more like anoying that not the challenge most bikers are looking for, we need to put rock on top of the sand like before now thats a more fun challenge. Seriously it like glamis out there you need freakin paddle tires

 

Try seeing the glass as half full instead- and be grateful that we are able to ride Whiting again, or just dont go there until those of us who enjoy it get that sand all packed down. I had a wonderful time riding yesterday, in spite of the sand- I was just happy to enjoy the park with my Trail Angels once again!

 

I never really mind sand too much. I view anything I am having trouble riding as an oppurtunity to learn. Sand is tough, but riding the stuff is a skillset worth having. I have done quite a few rides where the dealing with the sand opens up trails that are less crowded and really cool. Whiting is probably not that case, but there are plenty around, Palm Canyon, SMaRT, Anaza Borrego Desert, are just a few off the top of my head.

 

Suck it up, Garrett. Think how strong riding in sand will make you. Besides, I thought you'd be happy to have your fav. ride spot open again?

 

Two points one on topic, one not.

1- The entire Borrego trail was completely ridable. I cleaned all but one section because I had stopped traffic in front of me. Look at this as an opportunity to build up your sand riding skills.

2- The constant misspelling and 1st-grade level use of grammar by so many posters on this site never ceases to amaze me. It seems like many folks could use more classroom time as opposed to time on the bike.

 

Want an easy ride? There's a bike path a couple of miles away. :lol:

 

I agree with MaxxisRacing

Why can't a truck(s) bring in a lot of river rock/cobblestone like it was before (like 6 years ago) to put over the sand. More challenging.

Also, I don't see why they sanitized the start of the trail so much, like got ride of the rock step up at that one dry creek crossing going up. It used to be fun to keep momentum and finesse it up those rocks, now the rock is almost completely gone!

Ok lets get this striaght, yeah I'm stoked to have whiting open and, yes it was super fun. All I'm saying is since its so close to were I live and since am riding there everyday, I just think the sand will get to be to anoying. I wouldnt mind it if it was ridable but some part u cant even ride through it. Overall though I am so happy to have it open.

Remember there was a lot of heavy equipment out there fighting the fire. There was, yes, some rework that seemed excessive (tracks on cactus?), but I saw most of the changes as a result of the fire and the consequential fighting of it.

* Please check my grammar on that last bit.

It just needs to be ridden. But a steady 1/4" of rain wouldn't hurt, either. Any more and that sand/silt will...end up back in the drainages.

 

I just got back. It was my first time riding here in over 2-1/2 years since I moved to SD. We did 2 mustard/cactus/sage loops and didn't mind the sand on the second lap 'cause I was expecting/used to it.

A thousand thanks to all for their hard work in reclaiming a favorite past time riding spot.

 

Everyone should just take an extra full camelbak bladder on their next ride there, and dump it out in the sandy area you like the least.

It will get a lot more water up there that way than waiting for it to rain again.

 

yeah we should totally do that I'm willing, infact I will post a thread about it and if enough people say they will do it then I'm in

yes we all no its sandy and its also ridable, I'm not complaining, but someone brought up the idea that when you ride whiting bring extra water in a camelback and dump on the sandy sections in the begining, If we get enough people to do this it would really help. So who's in?

heck since I live so close I'm wiling to dump milk cartoons filled with water,infact I'm going to do that right now.

 

good ideas about the camelbacks being used to add water to the trail...I was thinking the same thing, but using the bottles.... a bottle party

*reminder* these trails/trees/scrub were destroyed in the fire. It will not be the same, but remember the rain years ago? :?: people didn't like the changes then either. Ride it more and it may come back to what it used to be.

Large machinery used? of course...wouldn't you want that if your home/neighborhood was on fire? Nature is resilient...so watch it grow and help it out!

Nice gesture, but doubtful that it would make a dent.

When we saturated one of the City of Irvine trails last year (over a 1/8th mile section), it took just over 10,000 gallons to make a dent in the trail surface.

Some of the sand washes would suck up 2,000 gallons in no time.

This is something that's just going to take time......a good soaking through the winter, and compaction by user patterns.

Just consider the soft sections challenges for now, and we will see the compacted lines develop naturally over time with use.

It's just nice to have it open again, and hopefully STT, Old Camp and the Luge will follow shortly.

 

yeah am not talking to whole trial there is just curtain sections that are nealry imposible to ride through a few gallons of water would help to make it through watch I will make a noticable difference to wear its at least more ridable.

 

I think the other persons post was a joke. Dropping water from a Camelbak in the sandy sections is akin to melting a glacier by peeing on it.

Your heart is in the right place but as Jam'r said, it will be a waste of time (and water)
