I carry a ton of stuff in my Camelbak. I won't itemize it, but a lot of it is for first aid. I come super prepared for that. Also, I really like to be able to render assistance to people who haven't come as prepared as I have. Those $2 instant ice packs have come in handy more than once, so I don't mind carrying 2 of them. I know that one guy who broke his collarbone in Big Bear about 3 minutes before we got there was really grateful I had those to share.

I learned from one rider that an Ace bandage is good for things other than a strain. They work well on gashes to hold them together. He told me that he threw one in his pack and it sat there for years. One day he had a crash and tore open his arm, and that Ace was there to keep it together so he didn't gush blood. Once I heard that, the Ace went in my first aid kit.

So yeah, mostly first aid stuff and the usual bike repair items. Oh, and always 1 spare Powerbar for emergency blood sugar level usage for me or anyone else.

If I am close to home on a short road or mountain ride, I usually only carry 1 water bottle, apartment key, ID and phone.

If I am going to be out all day or pretty far; Camel Back (70 oz), spare tube, tire levers, patches, allen multi (Crank bro I think), pump and food (for rides longer than 2 hours).

My pump is the most unsightly thing. It is that Blackburn with the hose and foot peg. I would not be caught dead with it attached to my frame, but concealed in my camel back it is something I am glad to have if I ever get a flat.

A full camelbak would probablybe good for a weekend camping trip + hunting + getting lost + calling for help. You're ready for anything... kudos... I'm ready for... flats. And thats about it. 8-[

That's the difference between packing for a park ride and packing for a back country ride.

What to take on your first ride?

So Im new to this still, I got my bike back in Nov but have been soo busy I havent gotten a chance to ride until now, I am planning a ride nothing big just around some trails in the area I live in. My question is, what to take? Anything specific? I know I should have water and some snacks, is there anything else? Thanks in advance!

    2 spare tubes
    telephone
    pump
    food

small general purpose first aid kit
    ID of some sort
    helmet
    gloves
and throw in some more water

Extra Tube or Patches, Pump, Multi Tool with Chain Tool(or extra powerlink), first aid kit, pain medicine.

I guess it depends on where you ride too. If you are going for a long ride, then you want to make sure you have something like the above. If you are riding around local trails or something like the fullerton loop, some things can be left out, since you are still near civilization.

This is what I carry always usually in saddle bag and jersey pockets.

    spare inner tube
    patch kit (stick on)
spare chain links and SRAM masterlinks or Shimano Speedpins
    Multi tool
    1 tire boot
    mini leathermen
    Tire lever
1 set of extra brake pads
C02 inflator with 2c02 cans or 1 pump
    garmin

If it's less than 2 hours I carry just water. Longer than that I'll pack a snack. 3-4hours I'll pack a PBJ samwich, fruit and some electrolyte tablets

Longer rides I add the above into a Wingnut backpack:
    the above plus+
    small hiking headlamp
    emergency blanket
    +1 inner tube
    map of santa anas
refolded duct tape + zip ties
spare hanger and spare chainring bolt
    vitamin I

I think everyone's got there own idea of what to store in their hydration pack (you do have a hydration pack, right?) and all the essentials seem to be there. I'll remind you of the most basic of basics though...helmet, full finger gloves and eye protection.

I would add a small pocket camera for the 'before', 'heck yeah i am at the top', and 'after' moments.

Since this is your first ride, I would suggest taking along another (hopefully experienced) rider. Especially if you plan on riding anywhere that help is not immediately available.

Most important thing to remember, as Pain Freak said, is to carry more water than you think you'll need. I usually fill up my camelbak until I think I don't need anymore. Then I fill it up for a good 10-15 more seconds. Carry extra water sucks, but running out of water sucks even more!
