What's interesting about this whole debate is that Mavic does not recommend that you run lower than 30 psi on their UST rims even while running UST-specific tires.

Because I'm cheap and don't want to spend an extra $10-15 for a UST tire, I've run the non-UST tire setup (on Mavic UST rims) for the last 8-years and I've had success when I've kept the tires at 30 PSI + ...but f you need to run lower pressures (like in really loose, sandy conditions or at say...Mammoth...) I can vouch that burps will happen .....Burping the rear is annoying....but I burped the front once and went OTB.....

I dont think it matters much at all when your running tires themselves at less than the minimum recs what wheel, ust not ust combo.... your going to burp. I see so many going to tubeless in the first place so they can run lower presures, ok, yeah you can, and you get away with picnhflats, but now your open to burping.rolling of the beads.......

Either way, I have always ran 30 PSI or more anyways.

At my size and with the relatively light XC tires I ran, I was running my pressures in the mid-upper 30's with tubes. Using a completely UST setup, I now run 5-6 lbs lower, around 32 psi rear and 30 front. Better traction, and I've never had a problem.

i could say ive been running stans and standard tires over 6 years with no problems untill last week. using maxxis crossmark tires i was airing up and what happened next gave me religion. the tire suddenly blew off the rim at 40 lbs. it was louder than a gunshot and my face and head were numb for ten minutes. the thing bike shops won't tell you is the bead stretches without a tube and can have a catastrophic failure. i hate to think what could have happened going downhill at 25 mph on hardpack. use this setup at your own risk.

I dont see how the bead strech would differ from running a tube or tubeless. Iv been running my non tubeless tires tubeless for 2years now. The only difference i believe between tubless and non-tubeless tires is the casing/sidewall. I believe the tubless tires are alot stiffer to prevent punctures and sealment from leaking out.

after the tire blew off i put a tube in and it blew off again. the crossmark xeption was a sloppy fit to start. but it wasn't the sidewall that blew it blew off at the bead and it was no joke if a tool or something else would have been close it would have been shrapnel

I run a Crossmark Non-UST on the rear and a Nevegal Non-UST on the front w/ no problems...IMO it is not much of a bigger risk, I have run Palm Cyn, Noble Cyn and SART w/ this set-up. It is not the $$ we are saving but the added weight of the UST tires, seems to me that part of the appeal of going tubeless is less unsprung weight + lower tire pressures + less flats = A good thing! Have yet to flat out w/ this set-up ("knock on wood')

I have been trying to tell everyone, and you could call me a bike shop.

Tubeless tires are engineered to stop this from happening, The beads have more material, and more specific QC standards.

well, it happenned. I blew a NON-ust schwalbe nobby nic off my mavic..823 on turnbull's A-line last night.

Partly due to too low of pressure.... and sloppy in a g out....

never had problems with UST tires.... well, i'm gonna go back to a UST now

i didnt read this entire thread, so maybe the question was answered.

i bought a brand new 2.2 wtb mutano raptor (tubless) at the fully swap meet this sunday. im embarrassed to say, it took me nearly 20 minutes to get the thing on my rim!!! (my rims arent set up for tubeless, and i am running a tube.)this really concerns me because if i flat out on the trail, having to struggle with getting the tire on the rim again will bring back horrific flashbacks.

are there any pointers you guys have to help with the process? turneROB suggested that i pinch the tires beads and make sure they are seated in the 'v' area of the rim for maximum workability, i did that, but it was still a pain in the butt. will the tires bead loosen up or stretch slightly over time?

    lame question i know...

The beads will stretch a little each time you take the tire on/off making it easier than the first time in many cases. Some tires/rims don't play particularly well together I've found, so a good set of tire levers is critical. I like Park levers for my pack and I have a metal DH lever + moto levers if further persuasion is needed.

i had to use screw drivers after breaking 3 regular tire levers. the tires were hutchinson bulldog 2.5 on mtx rims.

So, trying to put Tubeless Specialized tires on my "tubeless ready" Bontrager rims. The bike shop which I have enlisted wants to use Stans and rim strips, in addition to the tubeless tires and tubeless rims. Is this necessary or even advisable? Or are the strips only needed if the rims or tires aren't UST spec already? :?:

If you have UST rims you don't need the Stans rim strips

Just threw on some Specialized Captain Controls 26x2 on my rear. I'm not riding tubeless. When I spill the wheel I happened to notice there is a bulge. Is this from tire? The tube? What causes this?

    question about tubeless tires ??????

I just picked up a set of WTB prowler MX (race) tires. I just realized there is no marking for tubeless . I called WTB and they said the tire i got was NOT the tubeless models but he has seen them mounted up tubeless. My question is has anyone had any luck making a non-tubeless tire in to tubeless? or do i just use tubes?

I've run non specified tires tubeless using stans rimstrips.

Yep, I've read a few threads where people have mounted non-ust tires onto ust rims before. You'll just have to use a sealant like stans and a compressor to inflate.

However, my philosophy is, if you want to do tubeless right... use "tubeless" tires.

a ton of people dont use ust tires for tubeless setups, just go for it and see how it beads up

Am running 2.5 Minions on Outlaws on one set and 2.35 Minions on Stans Flow ZTR's on the other. Non UTS tires with the stans strips and sealant - no problems.
