You gotta lay it on one side for a night, shake it, then lay it on the other side for a night, then you can ride it. You gotta get the sealant on the beads. I personally run a finger of sealant on the bead before I seal the tire. I never lose air.

Installing Non-UST tires on UST Rim

What is your opinion about installing a non-UST 2.1 Maxxis Crossmark on a Mavic Crosstrail rim? The install will be tubeless using Stans.

Never had a problem with Maxxis tires doing this. Gotta use the stans, or other sealant, after that it works just as good as a UST tire. Just gotta look at what tire your using to make sure its compatible with the sealant being used.

Personally, I like using the Speccy tires with their 2bliss system. Its a tire that was intended to do just what your wanting to do. It uses a UST bead, so you get a solid seal there, and a little sealant for the rest of it. DEsigned to stay light for those wanting to run tubes, and a bead for those wanting to run tubeless

I've mounted plenty of non-UST tires to UST rims and ran them tubeless. It will work but it is not as good as UST. You'll be more prone to burping the tire. If you don't run super low pressure and don't ride aggressively, you should be fine though.

just spend the extra money and do it the right way, will it work maybe. But not as long and not as dependably.

I'm running Non UST tires on UST rims on 2 of my bikes and have had no issues.

You will have no issues till you have an issue. It works, but not consistently enough. Sudden loss of tire pressure can be loud, alarming, painful etc. If you want to run non UST tires tubeless, I recommend Stanz rims. If you want a good light tire for your UST rims, I would check out the 2bliss tires from Specialized that have a tubeless bead, but a standard casing. Bontrager has a similar thing going that is also good.

I have always ran normal tires with Stans on my ust rims. Some have worked better than others, but from my experience, I say go for it.

Stan's website gives a comprehensive list of non-UST tires that work well with their tubeless system. They also list several tires that have beads that are prone to fail running as tubeless.

Thanks everyone. I got a great deal on a new pair of Crosstrail wheels and they came with tubed Crossmarks installed. I have a used UST Highroller for the front and wondered if I should buy a UST for the rear or use the non-UST's that I already own. After reading all your good advice, I think it best not to take the chance with a non-UST tire as my goal is to have a wheel reliable enough for Palm Canyon (someday).

Now...what to get for the rear to match that front Highroller! I am leaning towards a UST Crossmark. Suggestions?

Seriously, later on check out the 2bliss stuff..... I would sty away from the bontrager stuff though, you gotta run theie sealant, and the Bonty super juice just doesnt do it.

Checked the tire review thread(sticky) and typed in Crossmark in "search this thread" and here are the results: http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/search.php?searchid=1789124

These are the only replies with the word "Crossmark" in it.

I really don't understand why people want to do this.

IMHO, the extra $10-15 for the UST version of the tire is well worth it for the peace of mind of knowing that you have the best seal and tire structure possible, especially if you're riding out in the back country or on chunky stuff.

Guys like Genus & CalEpic - I'm sure you can pull it off, but for me, at 40+ lbs more weight and considerably less skill than you guys, I'll take all the help and security I can get.

I would be willing to bet that Cal and Gene will eventually stop doing this. I do not wish anything but the best for everyone, but I have seen the pattern too many times. It works just well enough to lull you into a false sense of security (sometimes for a year or more), and it usually only takes one or two blow off experiences to swear this off.

the idea of blasting a tire off of a rim at the wrong time scares the ish out of me. That's why i'm currently running spesh 2bliss chunders. the 2bliss tires seem to be great for socal use as the side wall ripping chunk is some what limited here... so the weight of a ust side wall isn't always necessary.

I'm already converted to 100% UST rims/tires. My biggest issue with non-UST tires was the weak sidewalls. Otherwise I had good luck with the conversion.

I played russian roulette, three times last night and I didn't have any issues...

This tubeless discussion is clearly much less risky than russian ruoulette, but the testimonials of success leave a relevant comparison.
