Lefty forks are different, but there's nothing scary about them.

I agree with the Sling Shot comments, though.

Worse bike I ever rode. GT LTS. Almost everyone who rode it called it the Pogo Stick, except for the folks that bought one. Funny no one copied that design nor do you see anything on the market today that resembles it. Proof of a very poor design...

The problem with the second and third generations of the LTS was the peice of crap Rock Shox rear shock that wouldn't have any dampning. I'm guessing that is what you must be talking about. I went through countless Rock shox Super Delux/Super Peice of Sh!t shocks. I would have to go through at least 3 of them to find one that would actually worked. When the shock would work the bike worked great. But then when you got one that worked it would last maybe 3 months before it would fall apart or stop working again. I had one come completly apart in the air(the shaft from the shock mount) When I contacted Rock Shox they said it was my fault for adjusting the shock. WTF?? That was the begining of the end of Rock Shox for me. After all the troubles I had with all there products, I swore off any thing made by Paul Turner. I wouldn't buy any thing else by Rock Shox again untill Sram bought them out.

The third generation LTS had a very weak swing link that would bust every ride. I think in within 8 months I went through like 6 swing links.

Those bikes worked great when they worked the way they were suppose to. So IMO, it was not a flaw with the design of the suspension. It was a flaw with the execution of the design.
You guys gotta remember, many of these bikes were in the infancy of mountainbiking. It took alot of trial and error to get to the bike you ride today.

    This is key.

As for the Softride springboards, it was an incredibly popular hit around the upper midwest, where the courses were fast and predictable and your main concern was high frequency stutter bumps that'd wear you down to nothing over a couple hours. ...similar like cyclocross courses today. No suspension fork or frame offered such responsiveness, nor allowed you to stand up and climb with the efficiency of a rigid bike. Course, once forks and rear ends caught up with this new and exciting concept of being plush, we definitely saw the benefit of not having to balance on your peds while your whole bike dangled and boinggged around uncontrollably beneath you, and softride beam bikes were relegated to roadies with lower back pain. ...with whom they were and still are pretty popular. If you've never ridden a beam bike into a hard turn and let it sling you back out the other side, it's actually pretty fun. Still, even after having raced em on & off for a couple years, I consider them in the grey area between recumbents and proper bikes, along with slingshots and a couple other oddities.

But off road, and on the kind of trails we ride today, noooo way jose.

A lefty is a like a one-legged woman, kinda scary at first but after you ride it, you realize it's not so bad and you don't have extra things getting in the way.

I weigh 183. No failures at all on my 2006 C'dale RUSH 1000 with a Lefty. I've had other stuff give me probs, but not the Lefty.
