Seems comparable to people buying 84" TVs. Not very strange to see people splurge on something once retiring, esp if they have a pension, though a little early for this guy. Could be a house with workable land, boat or hobby car, but it doesn't seem like this guy saved that much, so it was a bike, as the story pointed out. Someone worse off probably would've considered a nice set of golf clubs. Gotta get something to fill in that void that leaving a full time job created. Might have been smarter to buy a franchise or something else that made money and kept you occupied with some responsibility... wonder if he manages to do anything special on it that's more unique than what a lot of other old timers are doing, knocking out their bucket list. Transcontinental tour maybe? At least he will have a smooth transition to retirement, able to plan to fill his free time better.

I know people that have a 35K commuter car and 95K luxury sedan that think what I spend on bikes in crazy. I have 3 bikes that total $6,400, The el mariachi Ti $3500 a Blur TRC $2,500 ( prior demo from the Path ) and a nashbar SS 29er $400 Everyone has their own hang ups about what stuff "should" cost.

There are very few fishing specific boats that get up to the 5M mark. For that price, you can charter a 100+ foot long range fishing boat like the Excel from San Diego, just for yourself, be waited hand and foot by a crew of 10, have satellite tv and internet access, and still save money You must be referring to the Viking 92. That is a warship, not a fishing boat hahahahaha.
Regardless of how much money you make, pulling money out of a 401k for toys is dumb from a fiscal standpoint given the penalties involved. I bought my '09 Tacoma, street legal Yamaha WR, Suzuki dual sport, carbon hardtail, and 650b all-mountain bike for less than his one bike.
One day we left the house without closing our garage door. It was left open all day. When we came back and saw the door open, my heart sank. I said to my wife, "oh no, the garage door is open. We must have gotten robbed." She rushed in to check on the interior of the house before i was able to get out of the car. I walked into the garage and saw all my bikes are still there. I shouted into the house "Honey don't worry, we didn't get robbed! All my bikes are still here." There is nothing worth stealing in my house other than my bikes. The combined value of my bikes is not $20k, they are priceless.
We can't justify with what people they drive. I've met huge commercial building landlord with 80's Corolla, my co-worker lives in 800k house with 90's Camry and my friend makes jack sh!t and drives 5 series. you don't have to ride GTR to ride 5k bicycle, 5k car with 5k bike makes sense to me though but who cares...i have my bikes and floop right next to me. people become a kid again when they get old...let the old man buy what he wants
The guyin the article is only 51. It's very possible that the money he took from his 401K was a loan. The interest on that loan will be the current prime rate. If he works until he's 70, maybe he'll half of it paid off...

I've seen one of those at Dana Point. The skipper was moored, resting his crew, I was preparing to launch my kayak at the Hobie dealer and we got to chatting. They were in the process of moving the boat from somewhere up in Washington state down to Mexico for the summer, for when the owner goes down to fish :bang:
Its awesome on so many levels. 1. 20k and you don't dare bunny hop curbs with it. Boooooring!!!! 2. In my neighborhood it doesn't matter If its a 20 thousand dollar bike. Its only matter of time till a habanero gets a hold of it and makes in more comfortable for riding to work. They love flippin some drop bars.
