Steerer Tube Too Short: Disregard??

    I had been following this thread from the beginning, and thought replacing the steerer tube would have been the safest and cheapest route. But, nice MacGyver. Are you going to grind down the weld so you can clamp across the old and new sections? Seems that would provide the best strength. Nice fabrication though. :clap:

    My wish of "Good Luck" wasn't given with sarcasm. We can all use a little luck. The work looks like it was done nicely, and I simply meant "Good Luck"!

    Work was nicely done, BUT, I would be leary of the heat treating at the top of the steerer..... give it a shot, but keep an eye ot it

    Haha! It's not, but it's good enough not to throw in the junk pile!

    I did grind down the weld, had to, fork is installed and I'm very pleased with it. Now I can move on to mounting the rest of this beast up with components.

    I hope those two metals are the same. Otherwise you may (over time) get Galvanic corrosion which is caused by dissimilar metals being in contact with each other.

    Play it safe and wear this when riding that bike.

    ahh welded aluminum with no heat treating, you might be ok with the extra thickness of the sleeve in the steerer or the crystallized area on the weld might break in a few weeks, either way its better then the first option

    It is steel.

    You can't weld steel to aluminum. Galvanic corrosion isn't possible in this scenario.
