My friend Jeff was riding Fullerton Loop 3/22/14 when he sustained a horrible accident. He was found by a passer by unconscious and was airlifted to UCI Med Center where he underwent emergent spinal fusion surgery. A fb page was set up so friends / family / cycling community can help provide support for Jeff and his family in this time of dire need. https://www.facebook.com/#!/supportforjeffk

Sorry about your friend. I wish him and his family the best at this difficult time.

Do you know what part of the trail he was on, and where it was altered?

Though I don't know what area the incident occurred, all this dryness followed by a week of rain really changed the terrain. Many areas appeared to change, seemingly, over night. A lot of the lines that I would normally take are eroded out, so you have to go to the left or right of it now.

It does seem that the injuries are extremely severe, and I hope he makes a complete recovery.

I went down to West Coyote Hills Park (Parks Road / Avenida del Norte) and saw the crash site this afternoon. It appears that Jeff may have hit a tree right after the first jump in the extra credit run. Definitely worth a speed-check for first time riders in the area as the tree in question lies just right of the trail and depending on how much air you get, the tree may come into play when you land.

Please support Jeff in his road to recovery and keep him in your prayers.

I'm guessing, by your description, this is where the incident took place. You have the option of bombing down the main trail that the majority of users take, or you can go up the trail to the left and descend through a single track with one half pipe kinda thing in the middle.

It's hard to imagine someone getting injured so severely in this area of the Fullerton Loop. Then again, it is the Loop, and the risk of riding there is often underestimated.

Anyhow, positive thoughts and prayers to Jeff and his family.

Ride safe everyone. It's important to remember our local trails, we frequent, can change over night.
