Speaking of bike theft, aren't our bikes insured by homeowners/auto insurance?

Auto - no, not sure how you'd argue this one

Home owner/renters insurance - in some cases yes, and they're pretty liberal on when/where you're covered

I ran a few scenarios by my agent before buying renter's insurance. In most cases, yes, you will be covered. I don't know about home owner's insurance though.

I added a specific clause to my renters insurance (Safeco) with pictures and an itemized breakdown of my bike build for a nominal premium.

I've had a bike stolen and all it took was a phone call, police report, and itemized list of everything on the bike. Just over $6k was in the mail within a week. (USAA renters)

Some do and some don't cover bikes or just a portion of their worth. I took out a added policy to get full value if mine were stolen or burned up. It cost less then 100.00 a year with a 400.00 deductible.

We've got USAA, too. All I hear from others is that USAA is the best in the business.

Anybody who doesn't have USAA should get USAA, if at all possible.

USAA membership is offered US military personnel, including those on active duty, those in the National Guard and Reserve, Officer candidates in commissioning programs and all those who have served and who have retired or have been discharged honorably. It is also available to spouses and children of the above.

I had my Fuel 8 stolen. My Home owners insurance was great. They covered the "replacement value." My policy was with State Farm....Two months later I recovered my bike. It was pretty beat up. I informed my insurer and notified the local police. State Farm said I could keep my new bike as well as the stolen one without my premium being increased or having to pay for any part of my bike's replacement. Now, I did have this policy for over 20 years as well as two auto policies with no claims. This may have been a factor with the decision they made.

Thanks! I have State Farm as well and have for exactly 20 years for home and vehicles. I have usually just called them and let them know I have something new of unusually high value for the item (most people do not realize how much some of our bikes cost) and they always just say "okay, that is well within the coverage of your policy" no need to make special notes etc. I just keep a list of the parts and pictures in case it get's stolen. I am glad that you had a good experience when you needed them, gives me confidence I am with the right insurer.

I once had a brand-new $2000 dollar bike stolen from my garage. I had charged the entire bike on my Citibank Visa less than 30 days earlier....

I filed a police report and called Visa. They told me I had theft/loss protection for 90 days after purchasing the bike, but that it was secondary to my homeowner's policy...so they said to call Allstate.

Allstate send me a check for the cost of the bike minus my $500 deductible. Visa covered the deductible.

If you buy a bike, charge it, even if you have all the money in the bank....you'll never know when you'll need their 90-day theft protection...

Generally, your auto policy will not cover a stolen bike but your homeowner's policy will. However, I usually caution people to be judicious on making claims against a homeowner's policy for things like this. Often, it only makes sense to make a homeowner's claim for catastrophic losses rather than more "minor" losses such as theft. This is because even smaller claims will affect your loss history and might either cause your future premiums to go up or a cancellation of your policy when it expires. If you are going to make a theft claim, I recommend talking with your insurer (not your broker unless he/she is an agent of the insurer) and have them confirm in writing that the claim will not affect your future underwriting or to the extent that it will.

Years ago I had my surfboard stolen off my parents motorhome when we were visiting with friends in Malibu. His homeowners insurance covered it.

If you ever where covered by USAA, you should still be able to get covered by them. Check into it.

A buddy at work has his $3500 raod bike stolen off of his car while at work. His auto insurance covered it.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I'm going to be a homeowner in June and am shopping for insurance. I know nothing about it, but have gotten a quote for $555 a year. I asked about my bikes and she didn't seem too sure. I'll have to call back to clarify before I pull the trigger with them. My question is.. is this coverage enough? Does anyone have any experience with California Casualty?

    Coverage Limit Premium

    A - Dwelling $337,000

    B - Other Structures $33,700

    C - Personal Property $168,500

    D - Loss of Use $101,100

    E - Liability $300,000

    F - Medical Payments $3,000

    OPTIONAL COVERAGES:
    HO0490 Personal property replacement cost

HO0420 Specified Addl Amt of Ins for Cov A

HO2490 Workers Comp Residence Employees - CA $100,000

    HO0427 Limited Fungi $5,000

What deductible is everyone going with? They quoted me with a $1000 deductible. Price of the home is a little over $300k. Thanks for the help guys!

I called our agent about this and she asked me to declare verbally the number and value of bikes. She also asked me to document with pictures and keep serial numbers for my own records, which she did not take down. That was for a police report just in case they did get stolen. The bikes are covered under theft when stolen from your home. I am not clear if they are covered when stolen on the road. If I recall correctly, they are not.
