Biologist bitten by rattler near Corona 'grateful to everybody'

A biologist who was bitten by a three-foot-long Southern Pacific rattlesnake in the Cleveland National Forest outside Corona was listed in critical condition today at Loma Linda University Medical Center, hospital officials said.
Mike Zerwekh, 26, of Moreno Valley, was groggy this afternoon but lucid enough to speak about his ordeal in a telephone interview with City News Service.
"I'm doing okay considering the circumstances," said Zerwekh, who is a biologist with the Western Riverside County Biological Monitoring Program.
Zerwekh said he was on his own time Saturday when he went for a walk in the mountains above Skyline Drive, west of Corona.
"I was in high grass when all of a sudden a rattlesnake jumped and bit me, in the leg,'' Zerwekh said. "I don't know if I stepped on it. I didn't see it strike but I did see it. "
Zerwekh will remain hospitalized in Loma Linda at least until Monday, Ellis said.
"I'm really grateful to everybody, from the police, to the paramedics on the helicopter, and the nurses and doctors at the hospital,'' Zerwekh said. "They all did an excellent job.''
Zerwekh said his father was flying in from Kansas today to be with him

I saw the police report - here's the real story on the snake bite victim getting airlifted out. The helicopter was part of the investigation of the body in the car 75 feet down the cliff, when the hiker got bit and went to the authorities. Perfect timing, and his lucky day to get a helicopter ride to the hospital.

You should see the incidents where it says $200,000 (STR)!

STS simply stands for structure. As in a structure fire (house, commercial building, etc.) they will put a dollar amount for the loss and for what is saved/salvageable.

Pam and I saw a beautiful red diamond back in Whiting on Borrego Tr. yesterday afternoon. He was cruisin' and didn't bother us one bit while we watched him closely for 5 min or so.

I saw a Southern Pacific rattler sunning at Aliso on tuesday. It was good sized, maybe 3' long and a nice rattle. He saw/felt/smelled us and moved off the trail in a few minutes. It was right after the bridge crossing on the main trail between the entrances of Coyote.

    Murder Victim

Only one guy got it right, it was a dead body rapped in a blanked in the back of a Saturn station wagon. A bunch of riders passed by the car i was the only one to climb down to see if some one needed help.

The bite victim was driving down so fast he almost nailed the Corona PD Seargeant. The Seargeant then called for the chopper. You can see his jeep in front of squad car.

Whoa - so you went down and found the body & called the cops? DAMN!! That must have been seriously freeky. Good for you for having a look though, someone may have been hurt.

And on a side note, am I right that the gist of this thread is that you're f-ed if you get bit by a snake unless there happens to be a police investigation going on nearby? Theres no kit etc. that can save you/delay things and the ONLY thing you can do is get to the hospital as fast as possible while trying to move as little as possible...
So assuming you're 1/2 an hour from the trailhead and you get bit. Would it be better to try and ride as fast as possible to help, ride slow and easy to help (takes longer), or to be immobile and send someone else to get help (takes the longest)?

We can't predict accidents... Either I ride with friends or ride a safe trail when solo (Del Cerro or Aliso)

    OR

    Bring one of these!

    No accident

The snake bite victim was a biologist studying rattlesnakes. I looked in his pasenger seat and he had what looked like a golf glub probably to prod at the snake and then it struck him. Ive ridden right over a rattler once and i see them all the time @ El Morro but never have they presented a threat, because i dont mess with them.

Luckily my freind had a cell phone because i never carry one, let alone ID.

We had to wait 4 hrs for the Riverside detective to show up because it was his day off, then they printed me because i touched the car with no gloves,(tanning my hands on the ride up). Never made it to Beeks place that day!
