You just haven't met the 'right' girl... and the right one is not always a '10'....

There is such thing as having both: sex on the trail :)

    I ride because...

...my wife says it makes me great in bed!

Well sure, but really I like that it combines a lot of different elements. It's very physical on one hand, but also requires a lot of finesse and grace. You can also be creative with it--the style you ride the bike in, line choice, and stuff like that. It's also something that requires a lot of analysis--line choice, tire pressure, suspension set up--you name it. And then there is all of this cool stuff you can buy! If you can't actually go out and ride, you can hit the shop and buy some carbon fiber goody and be super stoked. Finally, there is a certain amount of freedom that comes with it. You can go anywhere--out in the woods or in the city if you want. You can go by yourself or with friends. Whatever you feel like. I almost forgot that you can never stop learning and improving. I learn something new every single time I get on the bike. That, to me, is amazing.

So, yeah, there is really nothing better to me. I never get bored of it and I always want to go. I think everyone here pretty much feels the same way.

My joy. My escape. It keeps me fit and healthy, all while having a blast. It allows me to seek out new places to go. It gets me away from the frantic rat race.

It allows me to "tinker in the garage", to think about the marvels of engineering that go into these bikes and think about how best I fit into the picture. It gives me the opportunity to look and sometimes buy, shiny objects not named Ferrari or Porsche.

Best of all, it is starting to give me the opportunity to pass on my love of riding to my boys, ages 8 and 6 as I just started riding with my 8 year old on the trails.

At one point I used to give thought as to why I ride. I now know that I ride because cycling (mountain, road, whatever) has become so much a part of my life that I know I'll never find the answer to the question so I don't even ask myself anymore why I ride.

God made Bikes (in his image),
Then he made people so the bikes wouldn't get bored.

I love it because I can get dirty pushing my legs to the limit with ultimate pumping power. If I slip off, just gotta get back on and get pumped again. Once youre over the hump, you just coast... No better feeling than that.

As for mountain biking, I like it because its fun.

    If you stop you die

I think that South Africans have it in their genes to compete and to partake in energetic and endurance events.
I used to run marathons and do marahon kayak racing in South Afican rivers which gave me an oppotunity to be with great people and out in the countryside.
Mountain biking does that for me in the US.

I love being outside in the trees and I'm continuously amazed at the physical limits your body will take you if you train it properly - both of which I get plenty of on the bike. I used to trail run but now that hurts too much, so I spend most of my time riding. Whether it's slow and easy or hard climbing, it's all good, just get me on the trail and if I come home covered in dirt it's all the more fun .

  12. Last night, it was almost dark and I was coasting down the North rim of Chino Hills. It was a nice gradual down-hill with curves around the mountain peaks. The air was cool, city lights below in the distance, wind in my face, and whistling past my ears. It was like the bike and I were one, and I was flying. I felt like Superman flying high above the city.......

And all that other stuff too.

    Well said MBA,

Your ride kinda reminds me of when me and my friend went riding in some san gabriel singletrack (I forget the name, we were guided there when whitting was closed). We decided to head back too late and the sun set completely before we were even half way down. And it turns out the only flashlight we had wasnt working...

Both of us were riding down a gradual slope, riding through the thick black woods with nothing but the pale glow of the city lights below to guide us. Cool thing was that I instinctively knew the flow of the trail (since we just came up it) and I was totally calm in the dark. Literally the bike felt like it became an extension of my body, flowing and turning in the darkness.

I guess thats one thing that draws me to MTB again-- it lets me relax and get away from it all without using psychoactives. After a road bike and bmx, sold them both and got a hardtail again:)

Youre free to do anything when you've lost everything. :bang:

I love being away from the hustle of everyday in the city, getting out in the hills and challenging myself on the trails. Hanging with friends, sucking in dirt and washing it down with with cold suds at the end of the day!

    So, why do you ride?

I was just thinking about it and would like to hear from others. For me, it is a great stress reliever. When I am riding, all the stresses and worries dissapear. I am not an adrenaline junkie, but crave the outdoors and mountain biking combines everything I love about being outside. Sometimes I want to challange myself, sometimes I just want to enjoy the beauty. Sometimes I want the fellowship and sometimes I just want ride alone. Am I wierd? So, why do you ride? :-k

I like to go fast... I started biking because I couldnt drive. but now its my main if not only form of exercise. But exercise is only the excuse I use to ride. People ask why I ride so much, its easy to just say exercise.

I ride because I like to get out of my house. It gives me something to do. I have always liked the outdoors. I would be camping everyday of my life if I could. I cant get out to camp as much as I want, but biking gets me out into nature at least once I week.

I ride for many of the same reasons that you do. I need to get away from the stresses of work and family and love being outdoors. Mountain biking gives me quick and fun access to areas around my home that seem so remote when you're out there. There's something more to it as well. I'm going to call it 'the flow' but I don't know if that is the best description. Growing up I loved skiing, and when mountain bikes first came upon the scene (late 70s for me) it felt like a great way to get that 'flow' feeling that I got from skiing in a more readily accessible and year-round way. Another aspect of riding that is very important to me is the exercise. For me it has always been the one form of exercise that I could stick with. Running, swimming, etc.. are just too boring for me. I too like to ride alone a lot. I like the tranquility of being alone in nature and knowing that it's up to me to decide where I'm going to go, and how fast. Good thread, thanks.
