PLANNING AHEAD: The Modjeska Canyon home of David Edgar, a U.S. Forest Safety officer, is completely surrounded by charred earth but his home remains untouched by the fire. By clearing brush several hundred feet in all directions around his property he has now saved his home from fires for the second time.

Walked the dog a few minutes ago and there was a pretty intense glow and smoke plume up there still.

some good news: containment is back up to 50%, but it's heating up and the wind might become a factor again.

    This from Inciweb.org

    http://www.inciweb.org/incident/news/article/1016/6634/

    Incident: Santiago
    Released: 1:20 hrs. ago
Acres: 27,900 Acres Percent Containment: 50% Line to Build: 10 miles Estimated Control: No Estimate
    Equipment:
Hand Crews: 35 Dozers: 18 Engines: 212 Water Tenders: 13
Air Tankers: 4 Helicopters: 13 Overhead Personnel: 201 Total Personnel: 1,941
    Injuries: 6 Estimated Cost: $6,500,000
Current Situation: Today's fire weather forecast calls for warmer and drier conditions that may increase fire behavior. Winds are expected to increase out of the south in the late afternoon and evening hours. Overnight, dozers completed line from Bedford Peak to the bottom of Silverado Canyon.
There was no major fire growth overnight. The fire continues to burn in areas west of the Orange/Riverside County line but has not crossed the county line. Structure protection is in place for all evacuated communities and at the Modjeska and Santiago Peak communications sites. Retardant drops have reinforced fire lines along the county border. Contingency plans have been formulated and decision points established to protect communities in Riverside County. Fire movement will be towards the east and north. The hottest portions of the fire are west of Modjeska Peak, west of Bear Trap Canyon, south of Silverado Canyon and in the Maple Springs area. The fire continues to back down the south slope of Silverado Canyon at a slow rate of spread. The fire is burning in extremely heavy fuels on the Cleveland National Forest.
Planned Actions: Maintain public and fire fighter safety. Crews will build contingency fire line along the Orange/Riverside County line in an effort to prevent the fire from moving into Riverside County. Firefighters also are constructing fire line from Bedford Peak to Silverado Canyon.
Arson Investigation: The investigation is being conducted by theSantiago Fire Investigation Team including Orange County Fire Authority, Orange County Sheriff's Department, ATF, and FBI.
The Investigation Team requests information on a white 1998 - 2004 Ford pickup truck, Model F-150, standard cab with chrome tube running boards. This vehicle is believed to have been in the vicinity of Santiago Canyon Rd. on Sunday, October 21, 2007. 780 tips have been received thus far. Please contact the arson tip line at 800-540-8282. A $250,000 reward has been established.
Evacuations: Mandatory evacuations are in place for the canyon areas off Santiago Canyon Road between Silverado Canyon Road and Live Oak Canyon Road, including the Santiago Estates area and Jackson Ranch Road. Areas along Live Oak Canyon Road through the Trabuco Canyon area, including O'Neill Regional Park to Trabuco Creek Road are also included in this mandatory evacuation.
Road Closures: Santiago Canyon road south of the 241 Toll Road to Live Oak Canyon Road. All of Live Oak Canyon Road, Trabuco Canyon Road, and Plano Trabuco Road north of Robinson Ranch Road (northbound only). Check with Cal Trans for freeway and toll road closures; 800/427-7623. Check with your local police department for city street closures or the OC Sheriff at 714/647-7000.

    Pics From Santiago Canyon Rd.

I got an e-mail this morning from OC Fire Authority that Santiago Canyon Rd. was open, so Jake and I took a ride out there this afternoon to check it out.

This is the back side of Whiting from the road.

Christy's memorial was untouched! It was burned all the way around it.

This is the fire road exit from Whiting, just a few yards from the memorial.

And this is just a look at the canyon as we headed back to Tustin.

It was amazing what burned and what didn't.
From the road it looked like Blackstar canyon wasn't touched at all. Then farther up the road, both sides of the road were burned.
    Cook's Corner was also untouched.
You could tell that the firefighters had really worked their tails off to save what they could!
Silverado is ONLY open to fire personel and Modjeska canyons, as well as Live Oak Rd. were both open to residents only. They were checking ID's.
I received an e-mail last night from Bob L. and he's doing fine, and I talked to Karl this afternoon and he's doing OK too.

There's gonna be a lot of work ahead of us with helping our canyon friend's getting their lives back together, and also getting our trails back into form.
Remember, you don't have to be a member of any clubs to just go out and do your part. We ALL love these trails, and we should ALL feel the need to go out and do our part.

Here's to more "happy trails" in our future!

Bump for the nighttime readers, cause I just logged on to post the same 2 pieces of news about the open road and Christy's memorial. Driving home in the twilight, there was just enough light left to see how charred everything was. It gave me chills, and then hearing my wife say that the memorial was intact gave me those chills all over again.

Thanks Maxwell, and nice to finally meet you at the demo on Sunday. Maybe next time I'll do a better job of keeping up!

Bob L. say's that Silverado Canyon is only open to fire personel. Modjeska and Live Oak are open to the residents.

    Sorry for any confusion.

    OCFA Says:

CONTAINMENT: 90% at the time of this report. Full containment is expected 11/4/07.

    Almost there. =)

Thanks to the light rains recently, the air seems to be much much cleaner now. Too bad I can't wash that damn smoke smell out of my sheets. =P
