^^ Please report this to the Trabuco Ranger District office in Corona (951-736-1811) so they can get out there and block that go around or extend the fence. Maybe they can write some tickets, too. This sort of thing has to be handled quickly or word will spread and the trail will get totally torn up.

Went up Trabuco Sunday, saw some signs of moto tracks but the trail wasn't torn up or anything. Didn't see any sign of a "go-around" at the two barriers but wasn't really looking. I wonder if they are able to just push the bikes over the barricades (the one at the Trabuco parking lot and the second up a ways further). I'd think if they had skid plates and a couple people pushing they could get them over since the barricade isn't very high (see pic below of second barricade I took Sunday).

We were talking that it would totally suck if coming down Trabuco above the WHT split at speed on a bike and met a moto going up, not going to end well. We came down Yeager so were not so worried. Definitely need to keep the motos off there. With Maple Springs closed they're probably looking for a quick way up to MD (rather than going up Ortega to MD).

The go around was pic R off frame. Theres a single parking spot there. And around the pipe fence was the evidence of them going through the bush.
The evidence on trail was obvious to us as it was nice before and then significantly loosened after they went by. The flying rocks as they passed was quite evident too. Should have made a bigger scene, but who wants that on a nice ride?

    Rangers = informed

    Thanks for following up!

It's tempting to call people out for stuff like that, but like you say, who wants to wreck a nice ride? Plus you never know how people will react. Best to stay cool, pass along some information if it seems productive, then let the Ranger know there's a problem.

If I'm talking to a dirt bike rider in a situation like that, I'll ask them to please go easy on the trail (since all the maintenance is done by volunteers), be safe, and watch for other users.

First time back on STR in months. Thanks to all who have updated this thread and are looking out for our trails.

I'm curious if anyone's spoken with a ranger or read anything about the duration of the closures of Maple and Main Divide. I completely understand closing Motorway since it's singletrack and the map shows the full length of the trail was burned. That doesn't seem to be the case with the Maple or MD roads though, so I don't understand the need to keep them closed for so long, especially during the dry season. It seems like they plan to reopen them just in time for the winter rains to bring slides that may well close them again.

The closure is in effect until Sept 30, 2015.

My understanding is that MW took the brunt of the damage. MS and MD are closed more so to just keep people away. If they are allowed near the MW trailheads(top or bottom) they are more likely to go onto the trail.

Are people out there ignoring the closures and riding....yup. With only 1 ranger out to patrol, chances are low they will be caught.

BTW...The closure signs are no longer simply attached to folded up traffic barriers. The closure signs are durable, large, and permanently attached to the gates. Although the one at the top of Harding was a little bent last weekend...gotta wonder about some people.

Burn areas are places people like to hike for reasons I'm not going to go into here as I don't want more people going there. Saw 5-10 others out there hiking last month when I went up MW. Most were on MS but some hiking on MW. Didn't see anyone biking though.

Lots of overgrowth on most Santa Anas trails. Eye pro is pretty much mandatory, as is PO pro (and/or Tecnu afterward). A head net is beneficial in many areas, mostly around Main Divide near large drainages, but some black fly swarms are lower. Dusty and loose surfaces as expected. Be mindful of motos and other vehicles on the many blind corners on Main Divide; hearing them coming is sometimes difficult. With this cool stint is waning, an early start with lots of water is again the program.

The area got ~4 inches of rain last weekend; some water damage exists on trails.

Holy Jim is a bit overgrown but otherwise in pretty good shape.

Upper Holy Jim suffered a lot of water damage as usual. The ruts don't greatly impact the fun, and the trail is now about as technically difficult as Joplin.

    Access (revised info)

On Trabuco Creek Road, (the driving or riding approach on dirt to Holy Jim parking), a federal highway project will begin Monday, 7/27, building a new bridge at the third creek crossing. This is located within the forest, 3.7 miles from "the wash" parking area (the intersection of paved Trabuco Canyon Rd. and dirt Trabuco Creek Rd.) There will be a bypass road constructed, and flagpersons will be regulating traffic with the occasional wait of up to a half hour. Construction is due to be completed 10/25/15.
