For those who are thinking about laying some fresh tracks on San Juan Tail in the morning you should check to make sure Ortega Highway is open. Because as of 7:00pm tonight its closed due to flooding……just a heads-up.

You should all give it a few more days to dry out.....the Upper Loop and the bottom switchbacks are going to be very soft and slippery.

"Soft and slippery" sounds fun. But that soil is probably super-saturated right now, and riding it could cause some long-term damage. (Better to ride fire roads that get re-graded until things dry out a bit.) The San Juan Trail is takes a lot of abuse, and gives it right back. But letting it rest after this much rain will pay dividends in helping it stay in good condition the remainder of the winter.

PS: I mentioned fire roads, but they might not be safe right now. I've seen major slides on Harding after the Santiago Fire. Any trail or fire road that is exposed to landslides should be approached with caution until things dry out.

    Ortega is open

A few downed branches on New San Juan out of Bluejay. Old San Juan below Bluejay is closed due to heavy erosion and will be reseeded - just the .2 mile section between the New San Juan switchback. The meadow to cocktail rock is open. Heavy erosion on Viejo Tie but still navigable...

Is this report from and for a hikers perspective, or is San Juan actually ridable from cocktail rock down to forest station?

Hard to think it held up well enough.
