I trained for AFLAC when I was unemployed. I didnt stay, not my cup of tea to do door to door, but I got to understand that product pretty good.

If you think you might visit the ER due to an accident riding, or lose some work time, or worse, get confined in the hospital, get some basic Aflac coverage.

It costs about 6 bucks a week. No, it won't cover your medical expenses, and youre supposed to have major medical before they sell you the coverage.

What it does pay for is most of the out of pocket expenses via lump sum. Cash benefits go to you directly and is cumulative, not one per incident. For example, if you get a laceration, a broken finger and go to the er for treatment, you get the cash pay outs for all three.

    • Broken teeth
    • Concussions
    • Intensive care unit confinement

    • Ambulance, ground and air
    • Emergency room visits
    • Lacerations

They pay within 72 hours of a claim. You can usually get it through your work. Think of it as adventure insurance :) Here a partial list i picked up off the net. Check for the latest coverage from your agent.

do they reimburse you for use of an ambulance or helicopter? or just pay you a certain amount? I had a buddy air lifted in big bear and he said the bell was hefty.

they will not reimburse you for anything. it doesnt work that way. they will pay you a fixed amount of money for each item on the master list that happens to you. that money goes to you, not to pay bills. the extra money helps, even after your medical insurance pays for the bills.

major medical should cover ambulance service.

I recommended aflac to a friend. A yr later when she had to get recontructive knee surgery. It was a PITA to file a claim with them. Look else where for short/long term disability insurance

I'm very curious about the subject now that it's been introduced to me in this way. Any chance I can get some other places to look into as well? Hopefully I won't have to start a whole new thread on this...but I guess I can

I was told if I sign up for something, let's say a Fontruckstop race, and I crash and get hurt it's not a covered accident. That's bogus to me.

And I'm boycotting AFLAC anyway since they fired Gilbert for doing what he does.

i did a google search and as expected, there is some out there, but aflac is the major player in the market.

if anyone knows another provider, id like to hear it too.

whats important to me is to get just the right amount of coverage for next to nothing :)

what is the difference between open and closed reduction? maybe I am not reading that correctly, but it looks like it pays out just a few hundred bucks for fractures. average around 600? thats the lump sum? if that is true, worthless IMO. when I broke both my feet (calcaneus), I was out of work for 6 months.

I'd assume open means that they had to repair the break with surgery and closed means they didn't have to cut you open.

Either way, you are looking at $312/year. I doubt that anyone who rides is uncoordinated enough to sustain enough injuries to get more that $300 payouts each year (on average). Just save $6/month and you'll be better off.

This is one reason I liked this product. You buy only what you need. If long term disability is an issue for you, you can add that extra package to the accident policy and get paid for up to 3 or 5 years. I believe that costs about 2-3 extra bucks a week. Personally, I just want the accident policy for as cheap as I can get it.

For about 15-25 bucks a week, you can get a full package of hospitalization disability accident and cancer for a whole family. I personally don't think I need that much. I just need a few extra bucks to take the edge off a small accident.

I'm not selling anything. Just sharing info.

When I was training, we were told not to bother to sell this product to people making over 100k. They don't need it. But if you're making less with a mortgage and a car payment, you're not necessarily prepared for a sudden expense of a couple grand. You can charge it, but it is a hassle.

I have Aflac and I'm undecided about how much I like it. I think we're going to be pretty close to breaking even this year, but we probably could have come out ahead if I wanted to work it more.

My wife twisted her knee running when she stepped on a rock and it rolled on her. We had a hard time getting the DR to fill out the form to indicate that she twisted it when she stepped on a rock. Their policies only pay when it's tied to some sort of incident, so a sore knee from running doesn't qualify but a sore knee from falling on it does. We finally got it dealt with and they paid, but it took a while. But that really was a problem with our Dr, not AFLAC.

I hurt my back in a crash and they paid for Chiropractic visits. I think it was a significant amount for the first visit and then $25 for each visit after that. I felt good after a couple of visits and stopped going, but I could have kept going and collecting.

The agent I work with tells me to send claims directly to her and she'll make sure the paperwork is done correctly. I didn't do it with my wife's issue and that was part of the reason it was such a hassled. The chiro visits for my back were easy to file and paid quickly.

I get it through work for long/short term disability. I am not sure about this part of the policy, but I will see if we have that as well. Have not had to use the disability over the last 5 years, but it is nice to know it is there. If we do have the accident coverage I missed out on enough money this year to buy a new bike. Not sure why they would tell you not to sell to people making over $100K. HENRY's are the prime target for the long term disability, but not the accident coverage.

They have at least 4 different types of coverage. I only have the accident coverage, although the hospitalization one would have paid off this year with my son's upcoming coverage.

I've had AFLAC for probably 10 years now and I've been relatively happy with the product. Some claims were initially denied, but requests to the medical records department at UCLA to provide additional documentation were paid out soon after. Luckily I've only had minor injuries and have been paid a minimum of $120 for each claim just for a Urgent Care visit. Some were just for bruised ribs, bee stings, and a strained knee, all injuries sustained while cycling. I'd probably submit more claims, but its just a PITA to drive up to UCLA from OC. AFLAC did pay out a nice amount for my shoulder surgery and follow-up visits to the doctors as well as my physical therapy plus mileage reimbursement.

I have an accident benefit policy with a company called Loyal American. Its a bit different from Aflac, which my insurance broker recommended against. The policy I have covers up to $10k of out of pocket expenses relating to any sort of accident.

My regular health insurance has a deductible of $3500 plus 20% of the next amount up to another $3500, so I could easily be out well over $7k with co-pays and things the regular insurance won't cover (out of network, etc). So basically it is mainly there for rarer major injuries (heli ride, surgery, hospitalization etc). The accident benefit policy is $36 a month which seems high as it only provides $10k, but when you consider that it covers my a$$ for the more common yet still expensive injuries I seem to have every 2-3 years I think it is worthwhile to have.

I have not used it yet, so cannot comment on how they are to deal with. But since it covers out of pocket expenses it should be easy enough to prove since you would have paid the expenses.

If you are interested in similar coverage I'd strongly recommend finding an insurance broker who handles personal health insurance. They can help you understand how the plans work and more importantly help deal with the insurance company if you have problems with them.
