BIG healing vibes and prayers out to my buddy Daniel Jordan (ThinkASG/TWOP), who suffered a broken collarbone, ribs and scapula while on a road ride near Portolla and Culver. He got a flat during the Whiting TT and now this?? Just not a good start to the year for a SUPER great person and rider. As I understand it, he underwent surgery yesterday afternoon, so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers! [-o-]

Very sorry to see this. I went through the same thing a couple years ago (minus the scapula), and it's no fun at all.
Can you fill us in on the circumstances?

Big healing vibes headed his way!

Hey Rob, no I haven't heard the details yet but if I hear anything I'll post it. It hits home even more since you and I saw him getting ready for that road ride as we headed out for STT.

The scapula is no fun either. I hope he recovers with full range of motion...... lots of rehab in his future.

Ouch! Big healing vibrations to Daniel. My shoulder is still recovering from my dump in June of last year. I hope he takes the above advise and does lots of PT. Fell better fast Daniel!

Thanks, man. Daniel is a beast in the mountains as well as the road - I can barely stay on his tail on the climbs but he blasts ahead on the DH sections!

Just got an update from Jake (owner, MVP Cycle Center) on Daniel's condition - thanks Jake!:

Just spoke to (Daniel's) wife got an update. Daniel had his surgery yesterday to repair the clavicle & scapula and she said it went well. He spent another night in the hospital so they could keep an eye on his breathing as they had some concern from the broken ribs and lung bruising. She also said that he did not break his wrist after all (great news!), but he did get some stitches and it is really sore. He has been pretty groggy and in a fair amount of pain. His head seems fine and they are thinking that he may have actually blacked out while on the bike. He was doing some interval training in Orchard Hills (behind Northwood High School).

Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear this. Scary if he blacked out while riding and went down, but fortunate to be alive if that was the case. Prayers & healing vibes his way.

TranceRider - thanks for the updates, and I hope you'll keep them coming.
I ride that route pretty often, and wondered how it happened since it seems like a generally safe area in terms of traffic. Sorry to hear about the possible blackout; hope they get a handle on why that might have happened.

Definitely keeping him in our thoughts and hoping for a fast & full recovery.

I hope he will get better soon. If he blacked out, did the doc check on a reason why that may have happened?

I got the same update Via Jake. That was my understanding as well, he may of blacked out on he's ride. So far he's doing well and hope for the best at this point. At first, I thought he went over Luge, bc he loves that loop Whiting/luge. Bit did not know the details at that point, I assumed after hearing the laundry list of damages.

Acquaintance of mine had the same thing occur on a training (road) ride. The doctors couldn't ascertain the origin of the blackout, and it hasn't recurred for at least two years.

FWIW: I have a family member who blaced out once while walking down the street. The docs put her on anti-siezure meds, which she took for the next 25 years or so. It was only after another condition presented itself that they finally re-evaluated and decided she didn't need the anti-siezure meds. We will always wonder if she ever really needed them at all. My point is just to not take one medical opinion, especially if the diagnosis isn't 100% conclusive, and it's worth re-evaluating a condition like that from time to time.

This is bad news; Daniel is hardcore cyclist, super nice guy and has my deepest respect. We follow each other on Strava and I saw he went down but didn’t think to look at STR for updates on his condition. It seems that right when he’s at the top of his game, he’ll have a set back but comes back stronger.
See you out there soon Daniel; know I will…and stronger than before.

Healing vibes sent. I blacked out and went down on a ride a few months back, doctors finally determined it was low blood pressure, over medication and a cold morning ride. Combination of blood vessels dilating trying to warm the body, exertion, and dosage too high on my blood pressure meds dropped my blood pressure too low, causing the blackout. Change of meds/ much lower dosing and no more issues.

Happy news, Daniel is out of the hospital and home as of yesterday. He feels like he got hit by a TRUCK..... That's the way he put it, Kudos for him :)

    Hello All,

I was told about this post a few folks so I looked it up and I'm very heart-warmed by the outreach and sentiments conveyed. The MTB community is awesome!

Here's my firsthand account. I crashed on the road on last Tuesday evening. After looking over what I know, I don't think I just blacked out while riding. Here's the Strava of my ride: http://app.strava.com/activities/48102942 I was doing intervals on the Orchard Hills loop and I don't remember much about the crash itself, but I'm pretty sure on my last lap around the course, I slid out and slammed into the asphalt rounding the corner of Portola and Orchard Hills. I was out cold and woke up to paramedics reviving me and asking me emergency contact info. They transported me to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. They gave me a CT scan and determined I had three broken ribs, broken scapula (multiple pieces) and broken clavicle (multiple breaks) Dr Rotter, my surgeon suggested leaving the scapula to heal on it's own since the socket was relatively intact, and repairing the clavicle with stainless steel plate (I requested titanium or carbon fiber, his personal preference is for stainless (-: ) and screws. So that's what he did. Surgery was Wednesday mid-day and they kicked me out Friday evening. I was pretty banged and scraped up as well. Dr Rotter put a few stitches in my left hand at the top pinky knuckle. Originally they were concerned that my wrist was broken but xrays confirmed that it was not.
My left lung is bruised and they were worried about shallow breathing, so I have this breathing exercise thing that I'm sucking on regularly.
Here are some pics of me at the hospital. http://app.strava.com/activities/48485742

Feel free to ask any questions.

    Sincerely,
    Daniel Jordan

Good to hear from you Daniel (this is Matt) - rest up, take care of the healing scars and get yourself set for rehab - it'll be over before you know it. As for the steel plate - make sure the doctor's office gives you a card that says you have metal in your body - helpful to carry in your wallet for when going through airport security and if anyone suggests you get an MRI. No more MRIs for you!
