Rode down Rattlesnake and Escalator on Monday and they were fine. Wednesday they had them closed off to pull cable for the new hi-voltage towers and I could see the start of Rattlesnake had been plowed. Rode them today and apparently the County (according to the construction people) decided to wreck these trails for mountain biking. They turned loose some moron on a Bobcat with a plow attachment and now gone are the berms in the corners, all flattened or covered with piles of loose dirt and the trail covered with dirt drifts like dry quicksand, guaranteed washouts all over, no traction on small upgrades. And where the cactus corners are, they conveniently tore out bunches of beaver-tails and mixed it in with the loose dirt. After pulling a couple dozen spines out of my tires I tried to clean up the trail a bit but got so covered with spines I gave up and carried my bike out of that part. The erosion will be very nice come the first rains. It'll take a long time to recover.

What's Rattlesnake, and what's Escalator? Everyone has their own names for the trails. Are we talking about the switchbacks that climb east out of Powder? It's been a few years since they plowed it. Too bad, because the trails were in good shape. It's the fire authority that controls the plowing, and neither the park nor the Habitat Authority have any say over it. Don't worry, though. After a bit of rain the dirt will pack down, and next spring the plants will start to grow back.

If you wish to voice your concerns, the Habitat Authority number is 562-945-9003.

Thinking OP is talking about Turnbull Canyon. Rode there Tuesday and noticed the plowing had been done. Like OP I turned back also. I'm hoping they dont touch the 7th Street Loop. Bonelli also was plowed not to long ago, wonder if its all the same plan.

Yes, Turnbull, sorry for not being more specific. Contacted both Habitat Auth. and LA Co Public Works to see if I could get more info. Yet to hear back. This is my backyard and I ride 'em a lot during the week. Guess I prefer laissez-faire. Hope there's no plan to mess with the north side of the hill as well.
