I'm very pleased with the one in Aliso Viejo. They are always helpful. Don't have the boutique bikes but as far as tools and supplies, they work out well. Also they always let me used expired coupons... I like Performance Bike.

Performance is like Fry's Electronics. You have to know exactly what you want before you walk in. Go in, get it off the shelf, pay for it and walk out. You don't go for customer service. You go because you need something.

I don't like shopping at a big box store for bike stuff, but sometimes it makes sense when you need gels or a bike tool. Usually it's on sale too.

I went to Performance bikes last christmas shopping for a set of BB-7's for my sons bike.
They were on red tag sale and I thought "these must be a great deal, I'll take them".
A few days later I find myself at The Path bike shop in Tustin.
The same brakes were on the shelf for a few dollars less. It was their regular price.
I no longer shop at performance.

This was like 6 years ago, but I noticed that performance had a certain helmet on sale, so I called one to ask if they had it in Orange.
"yes we do, come on down" they said.

Of course I get there and they did not have it in orange- they never had it in orange- and the moron I talked to wasn't even there anymore to face up to his lie.

I never shop at any of them.

In the end, I'm kinda glad I didn't get an orange helmet though.

their bike components selection is terrible. I don't know why they can't do something about it.

    I love the Fry's analogy.

I think something has changed with Performance over the last 2-3 years. The prices and selection aren't as good as they once were. I used to buy everything from Performance, but lately I can't find much that I want.

They need a major over haul intheir way of doing business with the public or they will soon be out of business. I can't believe someone in charge hasn't seen this, or maybe they have and they are the problem.

I'm pretty mixed on them; had some good experiences and some bad ones too. The worse thing I run into is being a member of their buyers club. It automatically charges membership to your credit card without any notification. Also, at on point I had a lot of points on it and when I went to cash some of them in, I was told that my membership number wasn't valid and my new number didn't have any points. Also told I'd have to contact customer service to clear it up. When I called customer service, they said number was correct and told me how much I had on it. I asked if they could send me another membership card just to be sure and was told that I really didn't need a new one. Stupid me, I walked in to buy some gloves and once again was told that the number wasn't valid. Just a real pain in the backside. Once I'm through with my points - giving them to my GF to buy stuff - not sure I'll ever go back.

I dont know, I think they don't cater to us. They cater to people who just want a bike and don't care about name , or don't know much about components and stuff and only look at the $.

I got my IH from them when I got back in to riding. It had a reasonable build and a great price and no interest. I had no idea on sizing, and they sold me a small since thats what they had. It felt ok, but a year later i found it was wrong size after riding a medium but I would say most people who buy there would never learn this. They have great deals on clothes and tubes but past that I don't get much there. I did go there for small stuff if i was in a hurry as it was closer then the path. Now Jenson is my quick small parts place.

It is safe for me to go into Performance to grab some lube or a tube...I go into The Path and start thinking I need a new 22lb carbon full suspension 29er, it is safe that no bikes in Performance will tempt me.

Yeah, but just walk into most of their stores....cricket.... it's like a freekin ghost town. Then walk into Incycle, The Path or Coates, you'll see the difference instantly.

Those shops are ok, most chain stores are not as good for specialty items. or high end, they cater to the masses

While certainly not at the same level (or aspiring to be) as the Path, Surf City, etc., they do have cheap basics, and the one in Fountain Valley has two really good wrenches with a short turn-around time.

And I got a decent road bike there for $750. Not too shabby...

Because if they decide to stock something they have to stock all or at least most of their stores with it.

The one in Pasadena is actually pretty small but the one in Santa Monica is really big. They just remodeled and expanded a bit. It definitely has a "higher end" vibe to it now. It's right down the street from a place I audition at a lot so I'll stop in for gels, tubes, etc.

I go to the one in Laguna Hills often on Tuesdays at lunch for the Lunch Time special if I need stuff, or just want to cruise the clearance racks. I've picked up lots of Pearl Izumi jerseys, shorts and a really nice vest that I had really wanted for road rides.

Performance is good for picking up basic parts, tools or tubes, and like Steppie...its a good thing none of the bike brands they carry have me thinking about how I need that carbon 29'er high zoot bling machine like some of the Path Shop's will do!

i was there a few weeks ago and picked up a nice wheelset at an awesome price. Got a stock stans arch wheel set for $423... The cool thing is, the employees don't care about the company, and they will pretty much price match anything online and they supposedly have a good return policy. From what the guy explained to me, you can buy a saddle and use it and then return it if you don't like it.

If I know what I want and I can get it cheapest at performance, I might shop there. LBS for high end stuff / bikes... HAHA I was in performance looking for a cheap road bike and the guy tried to sell me a women's bike... after i pointed out that it said women's geometry on it he got pissed..

U know my problem with LBS in the Temecula Valley is that they all basically suck & have a very limited selection of 'stuff'. Performance has aot of stuff especially on-line. The only things in this sport of ours I can afford are the little things & performance beats the LBS in price & selection everytime. I want to support the LBS & I do my best but when only about 2% of your monthly income is disposable you gotta use it wisely.
