I've been using Orange Seal for the last 6 months since my LBS recommended the product. Orange Seal works great when mounting and sealing a tire. The problem lies in actually sealing the tire when you need it. I had a Hans Dampf with a 1/4" cut next the the knobby and Orange Seal just keep squirting out of the cut. I went through 4oz and the tire never sealed. Got home, added more Orange seal since the original batch sprayed out. The tire wouldn't inflate over 28psi before Orange Seal started spraying out. After emptying another 3 oz's, I finally removed the tire, cleaned out the Orange Seal and put Stans back in. Boom, sealed. On my latest ride out, I had a brand new Rock Razor cut right in the center of the tread. It was probably 1/8" in length. Just about all the Orange Seal sprayed out before I had to put a tube in the tire to ride again. I even removed the wheel and started shaking the tire back and forth like sealing with Stans. Nope, no luck. I wanted to like Orange Seal, but when I need it most, it failed me on the trail. How's your Orange Seal experience been?
I've read anecdotally that it does a good job of sealing porous sidewalls like Schwalbe has, but that for actual punctures, Stan's is the way to go. YMMV of course.
rub some dirt in the tear when this happens to me i always rub dirt or dust in it and seems to hold up till the next tire
I also went to Orange Sealant from Stan's, but now I'm back to Stan's. Orange sealed my goat head punctures okay, but nothing much bigger in my experience. But in all fairness, after one sidewall cut which didn't seal, I went straight back to Stan's despite the Gremlins. Tried and true.
I'm using Orange Seal, works great in sealing tires and the lack of Stan's boogers makes me happy. Its sealed up glass and goat head punctures but havent experienced a side wall slice yet. So far I have used it in about 4 bikes and cant complain, yet.
Perhaps your expectations are a bit lofty. A quarter inch is quite a bit, and I would not expect Stan's to seal it either. I've not tried any of the other flavors of sealant because Stan's has served me well for years. The only times I've had it fail are flats caused by sticks, rocks, and rim cuts (which are typically user error). I would try the Orange Stuff or Caffe Latex, but they don't seem as cost effective as Stan's.
I've heard that adding glitter to the sealant, whatever brand, helps seal the punctures as well. I've not tried it but a buddy swears by it.
I've had bigger cuts than 1/4" and Stans sealed it up without spewing everything out so my expectations of O.S. must have been too high. BTW, these weren't sidewall cuts, they were in the tread area. Just wondering if there are other riders out there experiencing the same thing and not just me is all. I enjoy riding rough rocky trails. If you're riding buff singletrack, hey, Orange Sealant would fit your bill because it's not supposed to dry out as fast as Stans.
Used Orange Seal and noticed that it made the inside of tires super slick. Had sidewall cuts on the two tires I put it in and had trouble fixing the cuts with a radial patch, since they refused to stick that well.
Yeah, first coat with Orange to seal sidewalls, then refill with Stans? I always add a lil glitter too.... Looks good on paper!
Thanks Andy for starting this thread. I too was wondering about Orange Sealant and Cafe Latex. Hopefully your LB hoops didnt take on any damage. I did try the homebrew that is 100+ pages long on empty beer and it worked OK. I did have lots of seepage through the sidewalls on all different kinds of tires, but it seemed to last a long time.
Without methodically testing both, I can't say which seals cuts better. Stan's is less expensive and more readily available. I like Orange Seal's filler tube better though, so maybe I'll start using their bottle but with Stan's sealant.
