A special Memorial Bike Ride for the cyclists recently killed in Newport Beach will be held on 10/28/12 starting at the Northwest Corner of Santa Rosa and Newport Center Drive at 8:00 am. This Memorial Ride is sponsored by the City of Newport Beach. Fundraising efforts for the Newport Beach Bike Safety Improvement Fund include donations for commemorative T-shirts and wrist bands. A raffle-type event (probably in November) will be held to benefit the Bike Safety Improvement Fund. The purpose of the Bike Safety Improvement Fund is to kickstart needed safety improvements for bicycling in the City of Newport Beach, CA.

What's important to know is that Newport Beach is matching every donation $3 to $1 up to $450,000. So raise $150,000 and have $600,000 to make PCH and other areas in Newport Beach safer for cyclists.

52 mile ride now on the schedule

    There's now a 52 mile ride planned.

    There are also raffle prizes.

    And swag.

And the opportunity to acquire income tax deductions...before they all go away (maybe).

See the Memorial Ride website for details (link in first post)

    All the Info You Need

I received an email from the ride organizers:

Thank you, Memorial Ride participants and walkers!
The response to this ride has been phenomenal. Joan and I appreciate every encouraging comment you sent us. It’s been a lot of work in a short period of time – but the cause is well worth it. We are looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible on Sunday. Here are the details of the event/ride for you:
    Arrive Early
Parking will be at a premium, so we suggest arriving around 7 am. You can buy a nice hot cup of coffee or something light to eat at Whole Foods. If you are riding your bike and wish to go into Whole Foods, you can stage your bike in an area just to the right of the entrance door to Whole Foods, EXCEPT for the first 25 feet, which are reserved for ADA and handicapped access. Please help support our Sponsor, Whole Foods, either before or after the ride.
    Please Donate
If you have not done so already, or if you need charitable tax deductions this year, please help us by donating to help improve bicycle safety. The monies go directly into the City of Newport Beach Bicycle Safety Improvement Fund and will be eligible for the City’s $3 for $1 match. Click here to donate by credit/debit card: http://www.newportbeachmemorialride.com/donate.html
You won’t want to miss some of the items in the raffle, either. We have a 2013 Model Specialized Women’s Vita Pro bicycle worth $1,500 and much more. Check out the items: http://www.newportbeachmemorialride.com/raffle-information-and-items.html
    Raffle Tickets and T-Shirts
At the event, we will not be able to accept credit cards, however you can purchase raffle tickets ($1 each or 25 for $20) or purchase any remaining T-shirts ($15 each) with cash or with a check made out to “City of Newport Beach” with “BSIF” in the “memo” Field. BSIF stands for Bicycle Safety Improvement Fund and it must be on your check in order to be qualified for the $3 for $1 match by the City of Newport Beach.
Until Saturday at 3 pm, T-Shirts are available at Surf City Cyclery in Huntington Beach or Costa Mesa. Cash or Checks only, please. After 3 pm, we will pick up the T-shirts and bring them to the Event.
    Event Details; Police Escorts
The City Sponsored Ride/walk will be held on Sunday, October 28, 2012 and the procession is schedule to begin at 8 am.
The City Sponsored Ride/walk will begin at 8 am from the corner of Newport Center Drive and Santa Rosa Streets (near Whole Foods).
Everyone will need to assemble on the top floor of the parking structure near Whole Foods (not on Newport Center Drive). There are several ways to access the top floor. The top floor of the parking structure is basically street level with Newport Center Drive. Click here to see a picture of what the top floor space looks like and where to assemble.
If you are driving and parking in the parking structure, enter from Santa Rosa and proceed to the top floor. Fashion Island security will be onsite and most likely directing traffic for those of you arriving by cars. Remember if your bike is on the top of your car, you will not be able to use the parking structure due to the limited clearance (8’2”).
The Newport Beach Motorcycle Police will be escorting the processional riders around Newport Center Drive. Families and Children on bicycles will follow first behind the motorcycle police. The pace will be that of a “procession” to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives. All the rest of our cycling community will follow the families and children, as directed by the police.
The objective is to keep all 500 riders together as one group. The police will be controlling the traffic signals for us to hopefully eliminate the group from having to stop during the ride.
HELMETS ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE RIDE.
Parking is limited, so if you can possibly park outside of Newport Center and ride or walk in, that will be appreciated. Here is a link to areas nearby for you: http://gis.newportbeachca.gov/gispub/recreation/facilities/default.aspx
We expect 500 or more riders and about 65 walkers. Anybody walking should stay on the sidewalks during the procession.
The Memorial Ride will end with a right turn on Center Drive. This will take everyone to a parking lot with easy access to the parking structure including an elevator (if you drove a car) or for those groups continuing on, this will be a regrouping area. There are several exits from this parking area available for groups continuing on their own or following the route of the “unofficial ride” – a 52 mile ride at a respectful pace, passing by areas in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Seal Beach and Long Beach where other cyclists have lost their lives. An announcement will be made about the unofficial ride by Councilwoman Leslie Daigle at the event. Here is a link to the route slip for the unofficial ride. Please print and bring a route slip for you and one extra for someone who forgets. http://www.ocwheelmen.org/event/show/33791505 Look for the pdf file titled “XL2”. This ride is not sponsored by the City of Newport Beach, and is at your own risk.
    Timetable
7:00 am Whole Foods opens. The store is beautiful. See above for bike parking.
7:00 am Raffle tickets will go on sale. Price is $1 each or 25 tickets for $20. Click here to see the list of items being raffled off:
    http://newportbeachmemorialride.com/raffle-information-and-items.html
If you win something, you can pick it up at the event, or if it is too big, we will make arrangements to have your item available for you to pick up after the event. If you won the Specialized Bike, you will need to visit Surf City Cyclery to order the correct size of the bike for you.
The website (www.NewportBeachMemorialRide) will also be updated for the winning tickets and the location of your prize for pick up after the raffle. You must present the winning ticket to claim your prize.
7:00 am Memorial Care, one of the sponsors, will distribute a limited number of arm warmers (lime green and black). First come, first served.
7:40 am We will have several short announcements and introductions before the ride begins. You should plan be on the top floor of the parking structure by 7:40 am.
8:00 am Mayor Nancy Gardner and/or Councilwoman Leslie Daigle will ask that the procession begin.
When the ride has concluded, winning raffle numbers will be posted in the Center Drive parking area and later that day we will also post the winning tickets on the http://www.NewportBeachMemorialRide.com website with instructions on how and where to claim your prize.

I got an email with some details but not really a confirmation. I think they just wanted to get an idea how many were going to show up.

According to the local CdM newpaper, there were 1200 cyclists at the memorial today. After the slow ride around Fashion Island, a VERY large group (I would estimate as many as 300 to 400 riders) split off for a longer ride. They went through CdM, up Newport Coast then back down to back bay, PCH and off to Long Beach. The "recreational" pace picked up speed with every few miles until they dropped me like a bad habit in Huntington. As I was falling back I check the speedometer and I was going 27 Mph. I was on my single speed becasue my geared bike is still wrecked, so I was unable to hang. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Here's the report in the CdM paper.

I won the bike fit from Damon.

Too bad I already got one from Damon a few years ago. I will probably go again and see if he can/should make any new adjustments.
