I never agree with you on anything but on this one I do.
Regardless I do buy the pass at "Shorts Chalet" every year. Another act of law the public has to endure.
It reminds me of the NO SMOKING in PUBLIC ordinance that just passed in Glendale (see Monday's Daily News)

Every year our fundamental rights as American citizens
gets chipped away slowly. I hope Obama's silly income tax plan doesnt go through.

Starting today, if we all were in comas and awoke 10 years from now, we'd be shocked to find out how many more rights as Americans citizens would be dissolved.

I really don't mind paying for the Adventure Pass, much better than the $180 the State wants a year or $10 a day to park at El Moro.

I have thrown the "tickets" away as well.
For the posters saying it is a small amount to pay with the funds going towards the local areas you are correct. My problem is we already pay for these services. It is just like paying to park at the state beaches, paying to park at local parks, paying for a permit to fish, etc.

No different than paying gas taxes that are supposed to go towards road repairs, then hitting us up for a bond measure to repair roads. Don't even get me started on the stealing of the "green sticker" fees to use in the general fund.

It will continue to be my small scale "silent protest"

Wow people complaining about 30 for a YEAR? Are you serious, stop buying bling for you bike. Patch a few tubes instead of just replacing them. I mean I see tons of unnecessary money put into a bike that could be used for this if the money is an issue. Sorry I just dont get it.

I pay enough taxes that our state and national parks should be free, parking or not. Paying $10 to park at El Moro is a joke. Even $3 at Aliso is lame. It's not about supporting the parks, it's about being able to enjoy the land we already pay to live on.

As I've been told by one ranger, they never really fought to get the money from you. As of the beginning of this year, they have a new system in place to where they will actually be able to enforce those notices, citations, or whatever they're called.

Also there are a couple different renditions of that "notice" they leave on your vehicle, I've had the first two:

    1) One is a $5.00 "ticket", stating something along the lines that your vehicle is not displaying a Forest Adventure Pass, and that you must either a)send them $5.00, b)buy a day pass and send it in or c)if you already have an annual pass, to write down the number and send in the "ticket.

    2) One is just a warning, letting you know that you need a Forest Adventure Pass, and it let's you know what may happen in the future. I got one of these, sent in the $5.00, and they sent me back a letter stating that it was just a warning, that I didn't need to send $5.00, so they sent me a day pass (COOL!)

    3) Another is a "ticket" for something like $100.00 or $150.00. I've never got this one.

One is just a warning, letting you know that you need a Forest Adventure Pass, and it let's you know what may happen in the future. I got one of these

Sorry, I'm confused, just what does the pass do for you? If You have this pass do you still have the parking fees at the parks? :?:

DUDE! I thought you were a "left wing" sort of bloke. I'm a hard-core reactionary, so I'm shocked that we can agree on this. Wow... Just like Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.

Despite the impulse to break into a full-blown rant, I'll try to keep this short. The paper that the rangers put on windshields is NOT a ticket. Right on the paper it says not to send money to the court. It says to send the money to the rangers. Further, somewhere on the paper it says that they won't come after you or hold up your auto registration.

Read the paper carefully, then throw it in the trash.

The Forest Service guidelines for the "Adventure Pass" state that the pass is not necessary if your reason for parking is for the purposes of educational research, religious activity, or political protest.

So get you a pen and a paper and make up your own little sign... and hang it from your rear view mirror. When on the trail, stop, kneel down and pray, study a bug, or toss out anti-adventure-pass slogans as you pass slower riders.

From a moral perspective, I find the idea of paying to use public lands repugnant. We have millions of families and children here in the LA Basin--children who have no guidance, no exposure to anything but tv, video games and shopping malls. I think all of us here at STR understand the immeasurable benefit the exposure to the outdoors and nature lends toward building a well balanced individual.

Yet, the Forest Service seeks to place further constraints on families' ability to expose themselves to the natural wonder of the public lands. People deserve the use of the outdoors, the Forest Service tries to deny that use.

Buying the pass is paying the parking fee. But some parks don't have a place to buy a pass there. And if you visit the parks a lot, it is cheaper to buy a annual pass than keep buying daily ones.

Folks, lets put the entire fiscal debate into perspective here. We are talking about a $30 per year pass here. Most of us are ready to drop a couple hundred $$ for the latest titanium part and have typically spent thousands on our bike(s). We also know that the government way overspends on wars and other socially more important projects ;) to be able to afford to put in the amount of money needed to protect our natural resources. I figure if my $30 a year will even remotely help protect the places I cherish the most because I can ride my bike in them, then its well worth it.

I have mixed thoughts on the parking pass. First of all, it clearly states, in bold and underlined, on the envelope that comes with the notice (not ticket) "This is not a parking ticket". It also states, again in bold and underlined, that "repeat violators may be ticketed".

I do get a pass every year (I'm not too rebellious) . However, I have forgotten to put it out, or left it in the other car. When I get the parking notice I throw it away. I figure why waste the time and the stamp.

    Come on people!!!

Do you really think this would change if there were no Adventure pass fees??? :?:

People spend $5 bucks at the drop of a hat on any old worthless piece of junk, yet it's too much to ask to pay in order to spend the day enjoying the wonders of our National Forest system?

The USFS gets such a miniscule amout of your federal tax bill that it's hardly fair to blame them for charging a fee. It's not like they are telling the government - "No we don't need more tax money, we'll just double-tax people instead". :-k

As others have said on this thread, this forum is filled with posts from people spending $30 bucks or more on the latest bike bling that has no bearing on true MTB'ing enjoyment. That same price buys you a whole year's pass!

Maybe its the crappy economy talking, but I just don't get it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if you don't want to pay the lousy $5 bucks then go to one of the many public lands that don't charge a fee and stop yer bitchin.

I don't think anyone is complaining about not affording the $30.

It's more so the reason behind it.

Okay I'll go along with that, but the reason is not a sinister one. The forest service gets squat of your total federal tax dollar. They need the money to pay for people, programs, protection, education, etc. This is not a for profit money making business.

You can vote, but you can't directly control how the government appropriates your taxes. You could however join an organization like the National Forest Foundation and help lend your voice in support of using more of your tax dollars to support our forests.
