I have noticed it seems as though the Mods love merging threads or just closing them if one similar existed before. Example http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/general-discussion/60641-new-tires.html . This poster was asking about two (2) tires. A Mod closed it and refered the poster to check the Tire Review thread. That thread has nearly 450 posts to filter through on 12 pages from probably multiple merged threads. This is the only website i have ever been to that shuts down every question if it had been asked before.

Granted, i also don't want to sort through 400 threads asking the same question. I would also ask the Mods to use a little of their brain before just shutting down a new thread because "tires" have a massive thread of their own. I'm just waiting for the day that a Mod decides to merge all mountain bike related threads into one massive one. Who needs a new thread about a mountain bike if we can put it all into one MASSIVE post for them to direct you to, right? That way, they can spend all of their time closing every new thread created.

The mods do a great job on this board. If you don't like it, then there's always mtbr or pinkbike.

    Strobe,

While I can see what your saying. Once you've spent a little more time around you will see that people ask the same exact questions over and over. The answer is already there, I like how they do that to keep it "clean" looking. Also, if you search the page via your web browser you should yield results faster. Its just how things go on around here. I've met Craig, Nancy, And Gene and they do a hell of a job keeping STR up. Most times they won't lock it unless it gets off topic or there were already a lot of threads about it.

I have offered time and time again if anyone wants to moderate for a day and see if they can do better and no takers, only people who whine about the job we do willingly on OUR time.

I didn't close the thread, I answered it with a the link that had "Schwalbe" tires in the posts.

With so many threads to look at we do the best we can and always try to be fair, but we can't please everyone and I'm not going to try.

Genus, i know you weren't the one who closed that thread. It was only an example of what seems to me overmoderation. I remember once when i was very young, my dad felt i didn't have enough to do. He sent me outside to rake the dirt. Did the dirt look smooth and tidy like a zen garden? You bet. Did it really need to be touched? No. Sometimes doing nothing is just fine.

That thread would have vanished in 2-3 days and been done. Instead, it was closed and directed to a Tire Review thread. Doing a search in that thread listed one post about the Hans Dampf. 445 posts and only one about a tire the poster was asking about. Its possible that single post answered all the questions the poster may have wanted to know about that tire. Thankfully, a Mod made sure that was his/her final resource.

I am sure the Mods here are general great ppl in the flesh and truely mean well. But, i currently am looking for opinions about a newbie getting into clipless pedals and don't dare ask here due to the frustration that a Mod will close my thread and still won't get the direct answers i am looking for. Its sad i can't utilize the wealth of knowledge and experience from the users here because of this. Its like saving that last bottle of your favorite brew for after a really hard day at work. When you get home, the bottle is open and sitting on the counter empty. That is what a closed thread feels like.

Point taken Strobe, but most of the time the answers have already been answered many times before. Your asked about clipless pedals and that too has been answered. Most will not use the search function or even bother to look at the "stickies". They would rather just start a new thread cause it's easier. How many times does one have to ask about where to ride after it rains or which hydration pack is best?

Just to answer your question about clipless pedals, there is thread that already exist:
http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/general-discussion/55505-noob-clipless-pedals.html. If you don't find your answer in any of the current posts, why not ask in this thread instead of starting a new thread? I used the search function btw.

Nope, not a single post about the Look Quartz in that thread. And really, if there is 1 or 2 members who have used that pedal, what are the odds they will look in the Noob thread to answer my question? New thread with it in the title will more likely get a reply.

FWIW, i always use the search function here first to find an answer. If I get no useful information to solve my curiosity i go to Google. I even use the "find" function with my browser to narrow down the posts that talk about my search term. Been there, done that. So, why post here trying to get information if it will just be closed and directed to a thread i have already searched and didn't find an answer? I have noticed that threads seem to stay open if there is a single reference to 4Loco's. Maybe thats the trick.

You didn't specify which pedals, all you posted was a "newbie getting into clipless pedals", but at least I tried.

I'm not going to argue with you about what we deem necessary to closed, merge or delete.

Post here or don't post here, do whatever you want. You make it seem we close and merge far too many threads. I can show you many threads of the same topic or questions that have not been merged or closed, but I have too many other threads to look at, but
no matter what we do, we're going to step on someone's toes.

Your comment in the 1st post shows how little you know any of us. There are only 3 of us Mods doing this. You forget, we also like to ride,
have full time jobs, have family obligations, train for events, do trail work, etc. At least we found time to change your screen name when you requested it.

I merged it and closed the existing thread. You may not agree with the reasoning, but I'll repeat for others. The idea is that relevant information be in an as few places as possible. This helps when people search for information. Regarding the tires thread, if the question is asked in that thread, answers will be in that thread. Easy to view the newest replies without looking through all the old ones again.

    Here's an idea:

Create a specific thread with a specific title and ask for the specific information you are looking for and mention the fact that you already searched, couldn't find it and therefore created a new thread. Oh, and make a notation for the Mods and then we won't close it or merge it. ;)
