The trail starts on Orangewood but it's best to park at the Oak Park school/park lot on Wheeler and ride west across the park, over the bridge and onto the streets. You take a right as you come to the street, then your first right, then first left, which is Orangewood. The trailhead is on your left through the fence, next to the wash. Lots of small stream crossings and overhead a canopy of trees which thin out as you get to the fireroad. This trail gets lots of traffic. Be prepared for horses, joggers, other cyclists, hikers, dogs, etc.
About perfect for a beginner trail in my opinion.I used to hook this up with the wilderness park next to it for a good ride. We used to do about a 12 mile loop some times in the summer we would do it a couple of times. It is one of the prettiest rides around, but short.
True, this area is pretty good for beginners and has a few trails which offer challenges for intermediate riders. There are a few singletracks further up in the canyon and some of the fireroad is very steep in places. If you go all the way to Potato Mtn, it's a good ride. I've never been all the way to Potato Mtn. but someone who has can comment.
Potato Mountain is ~9.5 miles to the top, from the beginning of Marshall Canyon. the climb is constant and great for training rides. From the Evey Canyon saddle to the top of Potato is a ~15 minute climb via the fireroad, coming down from the top you can come down the fireroad or strainght down the ridge, for a more adventurous option. The Marshall Canyon / Claremont Wilderness / Potato Mountain / Webb Canyon region is a great place for training and fitness maintenance. there is nothing overtly technical there, just good, clean, fast fun. weekends are heavy with traffic. best bet: night riding!!!!
Was in Marshall Canyon today from 11am until 3pm. Lots of mud and water. Some pretty good ruts in some of the trails make the ride a lot more technical than usual. And, it was practically deserted compared to the weekends.
Rode up there after 6:30 pm with Landshark & Dirttorpeedo, the trail was a little weti in soime spots, but very fun! (tires hooked up so good) also we encountered a friendly deer that just walked around as we hung out at a junction on the trail. a really cool sight to see, some ruts, and mud spots & fallen trees. the trail that goes from Stevens Ranch Rd. to Marshall Canyon Trail was the most fun.
Just did this ride to the top of Claremont. Looks like the City of La Verne cleared most of the trail. Now a double-track. Near the switchbacks, it is a little loose after the bulldozing. Other than that, trail is great! Water is low
I rode at Marshall Cyn today and it's in great shape thanks to the recent rain. The singletracks that drop to the junctions by the creek bed are all nice and tacky. Even the fireroad up top is packed down nicely. Lots of water in the creek crossings.
Climbed CWP and rode down thru Marshall yesterday. The trail is in prime condition all the way down to the bottom. Singletracks are all tacky and the 2.1 Nevegals stuck like glue. There's a little bit of water through the roller coasters and the lower section crossings but getting a little dirty is what makes this a blast to ride.
All stream crossings except for 2 of them at the bottom are dry. Tons of horses were up there on Saturday morning due to some sort of equine competition. Made for a nice cleaner ride without all the water.
Gate at Orangewwod was locked this evening. Rode up to the stables and back b4 it got dark. Lots of newbies on the trail lately and a couple of organ donors riding without helmets.
