I would rather climb holy jim, its a wicked hard climb, but it get technical enough to keep you from getting bored, save the maple srpings route for another day.

single track up, fire road over, single track down

I agree with ricky. interesting singletrack climbs are better than fireroad, despite a bit steeper/trickier. how else would I be able to climb cholla all day?

when are you guys planning this?? I was thinking of doing the same thing (HJ-joplin-luge) monday but I'd have to start around 7:30 to get to work on time. I was planning a relatively fast paced ride but I'd be down to meet up before and climb holy jim with some others. pm me if you guys are still doing this pretty please.

yeah, adding ken and jay doesn't quite make things much better. it'll just be like the parking lot at the loop tonight. ricky doing stupid stuff, you wanting to drink beer, ken flipping over backwards, and myself just shaking my head [-(

I'm interested in doing this ride, if I can sit on my bike seat after doing the HJ to Trabuco loop.

Is a hardtail fine for going down Joplin?

Do not underestimate the Section of Main Devide between lower Holy Jim and the Peak. Even when it is not icy, that Main Devide climb can hurt feelings. It is nice scenery though, and worth the effort.

Lucky Fockers. I work for the man and he doesn't believe we should get MLK day off. I hate the racist SOB, but he does sign my check.

I hate being kept down by the man! Taint fair!

    Additional info

Gene - I've checked out your geoladders but barring some pics, I'm not sure about the end of the ride description. so once I exit the luge and go downhill on Live Oak then where? I've checked maps.google.com and I don't see Monk Rd. also, when you come out of O'Neill, where are you with respect to the cars parked at Trabuco Creek Rd?

    Thanks for the info

btw- Stacy (you met her yesterday) made the cutoff for VQ: 6hr 29min. I rode the rest of the VQ route with her from the bottom of Motorway. After making the cutoff, we did the WHT loop. Ttl time-approx 9.5hrs.

It's actually Montessori Rd. You should see the trailhead for Live Oak just before the steep rd that goes to the school. Ride through O'Neill and come out by the entrance to O'Neill. You can continue through the camp grounds and go by the stables then back out onto Live Oak/Trabuco and you'll come out before the bridge.
