I think the most direct route would be Harding to Main Divide, down Joplin, down STT, then back to Harding trail head. Maple Springs would be an option too, but a lot more road riding there.

Like BraMa said, Harding is the normal route, but it is closed. Maple Springs is easier than Holy Jim then you can go down Cadillac or Rose Canyon instead of the Luge if you parked at Trabuco and went up HJ. Give yourself 3-4 hrs to do this ride. Either way, you will have some road riding to do. More if you go up Maple Springs.

Forget that. Once you go down the Luge, turn left on Live Oak and jump into O'Neill Park at Monk Rd. Ride through O'Neill back to Trabuco or chance it and stay on Live Oak and hope you don't get hit.

Cadillac is on private property, but better than rose Cyn.....

Funny thing about Cadillac is that it's not technically national forest so an adventure pass is not needed to park there. It's a nasty trail though, not sure if it's any better than live oak but it is shorter.

Also stay off lower Joplin/Rose Cyn as it's a dead horse. If the hornets don't get you the sheriffs will.;)

Joplin is one of my all time faves - very isolated, varied challenging terrain. The area has an untouched quality.

Is Harding open yet? That is the most direct way to do it.

Nope. It probably won't open soon. We saw dump trucks coming out of there from STT. Possibly mud slides in that last storm.

It has been cleared of trees from top to bottom and was brushed completely prior to all the snow.

what kinda mileage/climbing are we looking at for this ride? I might be down for an epic day in the santa anas monday :-k

I only ask because I'm lazy and tend not to like anything over 30 miles/4000ft. not that I need a 50mi/10k ride to get ready for some silly race :p

Not much as far as miles, about 22 miles if you do the route we did, but it's over 4700 ft of climbing.

    http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=19178

or this which has 24 miles and almost 5000 ft

    http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=522

You have to earn your way to Joplin, but it's worth every bit of it.

Take 2 cars park 1 at cooks, drive up to Maple Springs, climb up to 4 corners about 1 hour, rough climb up to Majeska Peak, down Joplin to Old camp, climb out, down to the Luge to cooks for a well deserve beverage. Figure 3 to 4 hours.
