I went through that rig-a-ma-roll late January. The skin prick test was the worst but not painful. I got pricked 82x on my back w common allergens and had to wait 20 mins w/o moving or scratching my back; test results were: I'm allergic to pistachios and cashews. I was grateful it wasn't hops.

Happy Easter ... ran into your brotha Warrior Keith at brunch today. See you guys Saturday!

I'll be anxiously waiting to get my test done in 3-4 weeks. I hoping it's just the shells like before and not the shrimp or crab or lobster. [-o-]

I had a pint of Stone EB 4-20 tonight and a pint of Pliny so I know it's not hops. See you Sat Rox

    Update..,

I had the allergy scratch test done last week(Apr 18th) and nothing came up but dust mites. :-k

They didn't give me a scratch test for shrimp that day in fear I may get a reaction so he ordered a blood test instead. They did test me separately for lobster, crab and clams on my arm and I had no reaction to any of those. The Doc wanted to be sure so he added them to blood test as well. Well today I got a call from their office and it turns out the blood results show positive and I am allergic to shrimp..., really bummed about that.

The blood test results for crab, lobster and clams were negative so that's a good thing. I have another appointment on May 2 to discuss the results with the Doc. Gonna be tough to give up shrimp but it could worse.., I could've been allergic to hops. Thanks again for all the well wishes.

Funny thing is I thought of this right way:

I went through the same thing back in 2010.
Ate Boysenberry ice cream at Knott's Berry Farm and ended up in the ER that night with a Benadryl IV.

I was 5 weeks away from hiking whitney and this put me out for 3 weeks with no training.
Luckily I was still able to make the dayhike.

At least you found out exactly what you are allergic to and can avoid it . . .

wow. at least you got it figured out. Can they do the shots for food allergies like the ones I do for environmental? Those shots have really helped me!

Not sure Kelly, I'll ask the Doc when I see him for my followup next week.

What's weird is that I've had reaction(hives, itchy watery eyes, sinus issues) to crab before, but it came up negative as well as the lobster and clams which I've never had any reaction. Each time I've had reactions in the past was when I peeled the shrimp myself or cracked open the shell for the meat on crab. Even after knowing I had these reactions, I have eaten the shrimp or crab as long as it was already out of the shells and I just avoided the shells all together.

I guess like many allergies, they tend to worsen the more you get exposed. Maybe I finally reached the tipping point when it came to shrimp since I had shrimp at least 2 to 3 times a week either in my salad, chow mein, pasta, tacos, etc..,

Not sure what kind of shrimp you originally had, but I seem to be allergic to raw shrimp, but cooked shrimp don't seem to bother me.
I used to have to handle raw shrimp at a seafood resturant, and my hands would get all rashy and itchy.
Managed to forget that, then had raw shrimp at a sushi resturant and had a reaction, not too severe, but enough that I'll skip raw shrimp from now on.

I'm in the same boat (not a shrimp boat thank you very much). Never had an issue with shrimp, lobster, crawfish
then one day I had a reaction to shrimp; tongue and lips swelled. ER trip #1. Thought it was just a bad batch,
China Kitchen Special #1 not prepared properly. Then while on vacation, shrimp again and this time the reaction was ... let's say more blimpy.
ER Trip #2 via ambulance. My entire head swelled, couldn't talk (breathing ok) but scary, scary.
I had the skin and blood test but both came back negative. Still I'm not going to risk it again because
I've heard each time the reaction gets worse. I can eat clams, oysters, crab but I stay away from shrimp, lobster and my favorite crawfish.
And I carry this with me at all times:

Good luck and you're right, at least you're not allergic to hops (or gluten).

It was cooked when I had my reaction, but I've had boiled, deep fried and Ebi as well with no issues till now.

Thanks Kay. Yup, I have an EpiPen now as well.

Glad you got your allergy diagnosed gene, sucks about the shrimp. At least you can still eat other seafood alternatives like sushi.

Sometimes that fake Krab has additives in it. Always ask. Sometimes those additives are added to real crab to enhance shell color if its farmed crab or shrimp...makes the color the shell turns when cooked more vivid than the naturally occurring stuff. Monkfish is what most places use that gets me. Lots of Benadryl gets rid of the hives that show up 12+ hours after eating that fake stuff.

Metric: If you get an answer from a Sushi Restaurant that the crab isn't real only when you explain your food allergy, run!

Glad to hear you got to the bottom of it.
