Foo, looks real good and now has me in the mood to re-build my SS...!

Need only a frame and brakes as I have a great wheelset built by The Path and SS crank, Jones bar, old Fox coil fork etc. Only wish it was a 29"...!

Dude i went to the path yesterday w/ gift card in tow to look for some take offs but none were within my budget...after you buy the rotors and adapter etc you're pretty close to buying new ;)

that's good to know about getting out of the saddle though :)

you know jenson is blowing out their 29'er frames for $179 :)

    1) Your Zion SS has come together perfectly. Hell, it looks so good that I'd almost mistake it for your alpha.

2a) My SS is also around 90% complete. As of today, it's only missing two brake adaptors and one set of brake pads.

2b) This brings me to a question for you folks: will Avid BB7 pads work on my original ball bearing disc brake?

    3) It's very comforting to know that the riding position on a SS should be (feel?) more upright. I had this frame built up as my alpha XC bike several years ago but I just couldn't get used to the more compact feeling. What I couldn't figure out was why that happened: it was listed on the mfg site as being the same size as my old ht. Huh.

Thanks for the help, and I'm looking forward to seeing you guys on the trail.

I use an extension tube from an old vacuum for the crown race. I though it would shatter the first time I used it, but it has held up well. Old school plastic, plenty tough.
I use a block of wood on the top and hammer away. It goes on very evenly.

I actually used a super wide flat head screwdriver and lightly tapped all around it until it was lose, but that was my old one.....

OK this if the final segment of my build. Big thanks to Neil and the crew over at Adrenaline for helping me complete this budget build. In the last episode, I was nearly finished with my build sans the brakes. Well there were some take-offs at the shop that I couldn't refuse and Neil made sure to make it happen. I also had a gift card to the Path and bought me a chi-chi Niner cog (21t DONT LAUGH).

I'll post up some more recent pics after I took it into Adrenaline for a quick brake bleed.

    Final Tally:
    Zion 660Ebb Frame: $179
Zion Seatpost and headset spacers: $15
    Juicy 3 take-off brake: $90
    Niner rear cog: $34
    Mavic 317 wheels/DT Swiss Nipples and Spokes/XT 6 Hole Disc Hubs $156
    Odi grip clamps: $16
    These totaled up to $80
    SRAM SS/BMX Chain
    ODI clamp on grips
    Shortened chainring screws
    Ritchey rim tape
    Ritchey headset
    Atomlab 18T cog/spacer kit
    2 Innertubes
    Shimano 747 pedals - $20
32T Middlering - $5 and a box of chocolate chip cookies

Grand Total: $595 for this build. Not bad if you ask me. I do want to thank Jeff (J_Sims), Neil (1x1Clyde), Waldo, coworker, SAR_Boats, 26'er Zen Master, and .8down for your generosity and time you took out of your day to help make this build possible! Thank you!

    Single Speed Ride Report

Can i just tell you guys it's like what everyone says when you ride SS. Your everyday trail becomes new again. I popped my cherry today at aliso. Going up cholla where i usually clean now i have to stop 4 times. The 3rd time I didn't feel so hot because my heart was feeling like it was getting ready to jump out of my chest.

I've never been a masher on the bike more of spinner so everything is new to me. It is quite a humbling experience and yet very rewarding when you sit atop a climb you just cleaned (I actually did make that short steep climb on the ridge to the top of Mathis) and watch geared riders come up huffing and puffing.

Overall, it's like graduating Jr High and starting high school...you go back to the end of the pack and relearn everything. The only casualty today was one of my blingy red chainring bolt that fell out (because i'm such a machine ) other than that my build turned out ok. I'll go through it again to tighten things up I did notice a little creak in my BB so i'll double that and loctite my chainring bolt so that it doesnt fall out.

I am looking forward to eventually switching out my manitou front anchors for something a bit lighter :)

Last statement is this: if you dont own a SS you should add one to your stable because it is an eye opener and it will make you a better rider. It's amazing how suspension in the rear makes up for a lot of things :)
