In my opinion, I tend to get hurt more often when i go dirt jumping at sheeps or fullerton. I always eat dirt when i overshoot my landing or fear landing short and cased my landing.

what is the benefit of stopping your wheels in mid air. Would that help reducing my rough landings..

Just maybe I hit everything too hard...I guess I have to stick to freeride and DH.

Tapping your rear brake will throw the back of the bike up and forward due to the energy dissipated from the rotating wheel. It's great if you are having trouble pointing down for those vert jumps or whatever.

It could be your body positioning or perhaps your suspension settings that are screwing you up..or maybe you are riding the wrong bike for the location? Dunno.

Im riding Giant STP with Fox Talas pushed down to 100mm. I have no problem pointing down on landing, i land too often on my front tire.

The problem is that when i practice more and more the more likely i hurt myself. Trying to master those 3 pack jumps. Can never be consistant on landing in the right spot for the next set up.

Sounds like a perfect setup to me... I'd say just keep sessioning the first one until you have it dialed 95% then move on to sessioning the first two... rinse and repeat. Make sure to mix in urban riding and general time on your STP to get used to tweaking the bike in different situations, it can save your ass if you come off a lip wrong.

Are you having trouble with muscle memory on how fast you need to go and how to take off the lip? If you go in blind every time you aren't going to have consistently good runs. It's just like a DH race run, memorize your line and hit the line that works.

i think dhp nailed it with muscle memory. my buddy nick is a pretty good jumper and thats what he told me to do once i figured out the first jump at kenter. now i just have to remember memory memory. what was i talking about again?

The same way you learned to ride a bike - practice, practice, practice. Don't think (or "know"). Just do.

I've just started dirt jumping, from skateboarding I have left myself with a tender knee. Dirt jumping is really making it hard on my knee, and honestly a bunch of other things. My ankle always hurts, from landing hard or wrong, it never seems to heal even with a 2 month break it didn't. I biked all day sunday and I am still super sore today. Bruised but not broken, hopefully I will ride thursday or maybe I'll wait til the weekend.

Doug makes a very good point... a lot of it will be comfort and familiarity that comes from practice in addition to the inherent muscle memory.

Sounds like you rode too hard in your earlier years  what kind of DJ's are you hitting? the landings are typically pretty smooth on well built jumps...

You said you consistently land on your front wheel first... are you on the transition? overshooting? your landings should be pretty smooth if you're coming down in the right place but I can see how you would crash/ have rough landings if you overshoot the intended tranny...if dialing the speed is hard, follow someone into it that has it dialed. that will give you an indicator of how fast and also what approach to take.

i have an answer since ive seen you ride, your not scared to just go for it and go big, but you dont seem 100% relaxed and in control of the bike all the time, ride some little stuff, alot and get more in control, you will learn to use your body postioning to throw the bike down if your going to overclear something, suck it up a bit if your coming up short, once you get the feeling of haiving more control the packs will come to you.

Repetition is totally the key, I agree. And R E L A X too. I wish I had this advice when I was crashing my way through doubles...
Let the Bike come up under you. Bend your knees and relax your forearms/biceps. Let the bars come up high. This keeps your center of gravity close to the bikes c of g. Then there's less impetus for falling left or right or over or hitting a weird landing.
Once you do "something" its easier to "undo it" to correct the landing direction or attitude.
Don't give up yet. You'll be amazed what happens on your next casual ride. you'll see airs that were never apparent before.

Getting big air is the easiest for me. Just keeping them consistant in the air and landing. I guess i have to ride more with people to get a good sense of correction.
    All in all it hurts...

Always do a run-through in your head, especially before you hit a set of jumps. See it, do it.

I know this sounds kinda lame and new agey, but I find if I play what I want to do through in my head, in detail, just before I do it, it really helps.
You kinda 'see' youself in your mind doing it exactly how you want to do it...when you compress, when you push off, spotting the landing, everything...go through it a few times in your mind, really 'see' yourself doing it...

To me, sounds like your using negative thoughts too much?? I have learned my lesson with that when i was younger on bmx bikes.. everytime i think of crash stuff that is gonna hurt.. i end up hurting myself. So now that I dont think about it, and contreate on where im rolling both of my wheels towards, and balancing my body on the bicycle.. I have to say do some urban street riding first, it helps alot.. bunny hop up the steps big and bigger seems to help me out with jumping off lip..
