Does anyone know if that tree's still there? I'm going to go get a ride in and if it's still there I'll bring a saw.

Just got back from a ride. The tree is still there. Pretty much out of the way, but still there.

They cut down parts of it so it's passable but a huge chunk of the trunk is still kinda in the way... lemme know if you take care of it today, otherwise I was gonna e-mail the rangers. Thanks!

I met 3 riders at the top of the chute at the end of 7th and they all said the tree was not an issue. Decided a blast down A line and beer/bbq was a better option than continuing downhill. If someone goes soon can you post a pic of any obstacles?

I didn't get the ranger's name. Like I said, I know he was only doing his job and he was being totally cool.

Do not ride on the sidewalk, signs will be going up soon and I'm sure they will be enforcing. Also, be careful where you put your bike. According to "the" resident it's a violation to have it on the sidewalk. The jury is still out on what to do for a long term solution. If anyone wants the audio from tonight's meeting send me a pm with your email address.

What was the tone when talking about bikers like? Was it just this one resident who is upset or is there a lot of conflict? And is it JUST about biking on Beverly who was there more talk about actual mountain biking on the trails? Hehe I'll pm you with my e-mail. Thanks for going!

No worries Tara. I just emailed you the audio so you can listen for yourself.
The short version is that "the" resident has issues with the parking and activities going on on Beverly Blvd. After a slightly heated conversation he admitted that it's not just bikers and that the majority of people using the trails are runners and hikers. Losing access to the trail is NOT an issue so let's just kill that rumor right now. If anyone has any suggestions on how to relive the parking situation up there, please speak up. Parking down the street helps but is not a solution.

Park at uptown, ride from there and support the local businesses (after/before)! That's my suggestion =)

Thanks for dispelling the rumors! I love (most of) the people who live around there, they are usually so friendly and good to talk to.

Also, I know that I can get excited when I ride there and really have to remind myself to keep my voice down, esp AFTER a great ride. Don't be afraid to tell your buddies (or me!) if they are being too loud, we all do it somtimes without even realizing we're being loud, a simple reminder is great.

Good suggestions Tara. There was some talk of looking into putting in more parking spots on Beverly but since the trails are habitat authority property....

    P. S. You guys sitting on the sideline watching should speak up before things get worse for us.

Mike, thanks for attending the meeting and for keeping us informed. I know it's illegal to ride on the sidewalks but it's a violation to have it on the sidewalk? Hmmm, where do I put my bike if I'm unloading it from the bike rack or truck? I believe it's not illegal if you walk your bike on the sidewalk.

I usually ride Turnbull solo due to my irregular schedule and most of the time during the weekdays, and based on my observation, there is very little cars parked on Beverly Blvd, between Painter Ave and Alta (with more cars of hikers than bikers). I notice that parking becomes a big problem on weekends though.

+1 on what Tara said regarding keeping our noise levels down. I'm always quiet and say hi to the residents there when I park along Beverly Blvd and ride solo and the residents always seem friendly and smile, but when I'm with a group of friends, we sometimes forget that our voices become loud in our conversations. I will try to consciously remember to keep the noise level down until we get to the fireroad.

just a quick heads-up for anyone riding/hiking on Turnbull Canyon...

(This information was copied from the Whittier Daily News, which was posted 10/07/2011 05:52:05 PM PDT)
WHITTIER - The city's Parking and Transportation Commission has devised a short-term solution to complaints from residents who live near Beverly Boulevard and Turnbull Canyon Road about mountain bikers taking up their parking.

There will be more red curbs to make it safer to back out of driveways and signs stating it's illegal to ride on sidewalks already have been posted. Both were approved by the commission Thursday.

This whole debacle is BS. The guy who filed these complaints admitted that the majority of traffic there is NOT from mountain bikers but from hikers and runners....

That sounds very reasonable to me, and we should be grateful that harsher measures were not enacted. After all, drivers who crowd a residents' driveways are rude, and riders who ride on the sidewalk are jerks. Everyone from STR is kind and courteous, so the new rules won't even affect us.

Im a frequent rider here and its sad to see what's going on at Turnbull trails. Trails being closed to riders, riders getting ticketed, ECT. Been riding Turnbull for yrs and never saw any of this till recently! Sad that it always takes a bad few to ruin it for the many! The parking situation up there is horrible for a park that sees so many visitors. It's surprising these issues have not came up before, at least to my knowledge. As long as ive been going up there, ive never seen any of the behaviours posted on this thread, but its certainly feasible given the amount of folks that head up there on weekends. I think if they fix the parking situation, things would be fine. Nobody wants a bunch of strangers parking in front of their house all the time, and its easy to point at cars with bikes on them!
