    I'm a believer in taking a recovery drink mixture of protein and carbs within 1 hour after a workout. Realize that riding your bike is not a natural action, and so are most endurance sports, hence the need for supplemental nutrition. If you don't like the powdered stuff, you can always make your own from raw materials like egg whites, milk, honey and some fruit. Powdered doesn't necessarily mean unnatural, it can also mean prepared. Powdered glucose is sugar. And whey protein is a by-product of cheese manufacturing.

    Recovery drinks are great for people who want to have energy for the rest of the day, and recover from exercise stronger.
