First time back to Aliso this morning. I think I set several PWs and got a couple of SOMs on the climbs. Here are a few revelations that I already knew - but were especially amplified today.
1.) 2400' of climbing in Aliso is a lot harder than the 2400' of climbing of Whiting-Luge-Whiting.
2.) Riding alone may not be the smartest thing to do, if you like going fast.
3.) Stationary bikes bear little resemblance to mountain biking.
    4.) Mountain biking is fun.

Since I was riding alone, I rolled off the throttle for Rock-It and Lynx. It was kind of hard to do, actually. Wise, but not as fun. Good run down Meadows - braking bumps are out in full force and the straight-down-the-middle cheater lines are clearly getting a ton of traffic. Someone chopped them up on the bottom third to make them unridable. I won't ride them regardless. I am not interested in KOMs, and I like the flowy bermed turns that Kioti and crew installed.

Shoulder felt great, and I was able to lift my 30.5lb bike to my car roof rack! Good to be back. Now, about that fitness...

    Good to hear your back!
And yes, 1-4 are all true, in pretty much equal amounts/
Braking bumps are out of control everywhere due to the poor rain we got this year.

The fact you got on a stationary bike is in itself progress.....

I know you mentioned stationary bike but have/ or do you gone to spin class? I have been going as of late and I think its great way to work your cardio.

I took a spill recently on one of the paved berms. Grated me like cheese along with a nice fat welt on my hip. It my turn to tap out!

BTW welcome back! There are only 23 around here now?

Any case hope to see you up at bear sometime !

I still vividly remember getting hit by a car at age 15 (this would have been 1977) riding my Sears Free Spirit 10 speed to school. I stupidly assumed the last car I saw coming would be the last car I needed to worry about. I have never assumed that since. I always look over my shoulder one more time before crossing the street on a diagonal since then.

Luckily no major damage other than to my ego.

Glad to hear you are still yourself.

I took a pretty bad fall in 2009 that broke a couple bones and kept me off the bike for about 8 months. During recovery, I remember people (friends, coworkers) asking me if I would still ride mountain bikes once I was healed. It was a little odd, because I had never really thought of not continuing to ride bikes. My response would be something like, "What do you mean?", and they'd act like it was irresponsible of me to keep riding. Anyway, mountain biking is fun!

I took spill on rim trail heading toward mtn wilson in 08. I don't handle exposure well anymore. Had a little freakout during the 2010 Vision Quest. I've had a couple of hits that turned into concussions, and just did my road bike in (http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/showthread.php?70726-Wrecked-my-Kona). The road bike won't be an issue, and mtn riding where there's no edge to go over is all fine. I'm with Jeff - people act like i'm a little crazy to get back on my bike, but it's too much fun. I get really twitchy when I don't get out on the road bike for more than a couple of days.

Yup - I got that from people after my two ski injuries and this latest MtB injury. Most people do not understand that injury is an acceptable part of what we do.

And thanks for the positive comments.

I have empirical proof of my slowness. 1.) I used my granny gear (24 x36) on parts of Cholla and Mathis. I NEVER use my granny gear on those trails.
    2.) I got passed by a hiker, and I wasn't walking.

2nd that, I hardly ever get out of granny gear in both of those trails ( only on those rare strong days). I keep hitting meadows up to see if that builds uphill strength faster.

But you're pushing bigger wheels, I believe (650b yes?). If so, that affects the gear ratios or at least the power required to turn over the pedals in any particular gear.
